Chapter Fifteen – Planning an Escape Albert was bitter about being denied leave, but he also knew that the lieutenant was right in the sense that he would have missed the funeral. He understood tunnellers were in short supply, a fact that manifested itself in the lack of relief available. Even if Albert could not visit England, he would have at least liked to visit Marie. He wrote letters to his mother and to Marie explaining his frustrations while being careful to not write anything that might not pass the censor.
