“It’s wrong that war should tarnish Christmas,” Emily complained. “If they had more recruits, maybe it would be all over by now. Someone should cancel Christmas.” “Can you at least try to enjoy yourself?” asked Albert. He wrapped them up warm against the cold, taking Tilly to Cheapside where they had set up a merry-go-round. Tilly gasped as she marvelled at the golden horses painted with extravagant decorations. There were also carriages, and on the back of one she shrieked at the site of an elegantly painted leopard stretched out on the bough of a tree. The steam engine powered not just the merry-go-round, but also a pipe organ which was playing the light hearted Over the Waves. It fascinated Albert. Tilly was already very excited, having spent the day making paper chains to decorate
