Chapter ThirtyTwenty-Six Days After Kevin Roper was in one of a dozen chairs near the entrance to the Detective Division of the LAPD. He had been waiting twenty minutes so far and didn't know why he was there. Uniformed and plain clothed officers strolled past him on their way to somewhere without ever noticing his presence. He could see about fifteen desks in an open workspace with glassed offices forming a “U” shape around them. Stacey Gray emerged from one of the offices and walked over to Kevin and extended a hand. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Roper. Please come with me.” She turned and he followed her down a hall and into a conference room where Jeff Butler waited. “Please, Mr. Roper, have a seat.” She pointed to a chair. “Why am I here, Detective?” he said, sounding annoyed. “
