Chapter Nine Dancing for Sex Rock music blared. Bodies crammed the dance floor. The air smelled of liquor and sweat and perfume, a dozen scents, some expensive, others like dime store toilet water. The flashing lights were bright and annoying, and my head was spinning even before Jess pushed me to the dance floor. I’d been in nightclubs like this before, in the hours after midnight, when every sober person had already left and those that remained were hardcore party animals who would rock the night till the wee hours and dine on breakfast in some greasy spoon when the sun rose. The packed room made me dizzy, but I had no complaints. I didn’t even mind the smoke. It felt like it belonged there, essential to the atmosphere.
