Chapter 4

Saturday couldn't have come faster. Beatrix and I already decided to meet at the nearest Starbucks. I was extremely nervous and couldn't help but think if she'd think I'm a total b***h or just extremely stupid. I had to pull myself together. I almost told Eva about my plans but I didn't want her to go talking with that big mouth of hers. I loved her and all but she sure did brag a lot. Even about things that didn't involve her. I arrived at Starbucks and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. I told her to be there at two and she hadn't arrived yet. I got there at 1:45 and it was now 2:45. A simple text saying she was late could've been proper enough. I decided to leave already but then I got a text. "Sorry, I'm not there yet but I left early this morning and am so tired of driving. Let me pick you up and we could talk here at the hotel. See you in 10." Great. I felt stood up for some reason. I sent a quick text telling her okay when to my ungrateful luck, Aphrodite and Logan walked in. "Well fancy seeing you here Beatrix." Logan said as soon as he saw me. "Umm, Logan that's Silvia..." Aphrodite told him. "No, No, Silvia is my alias Aphrodite. I'm most definitely Beatrix!" I said, trying to be convincing. "Oh, well okay then." She looked confused. An awkward silence followed and a car pulled up that looked like what Beatrix described it. I was suddenly relieved. She got out and walked towards the entrance. Shit. "Okay well I got to go now!" I said quickly and made my way outside trying to shoo away Beatrix back to her car. "Umm... okay." They both looked at me weirdly. Beatrix stood in the middle of the parking lot and said "Oh my God. Looks like you really are... well... real!" she said with a laugh. "I had a feeling you'd be someone else..." "I had the same feeling! Wow, I can't believe I have a twin! Anyways, sorry to cut this little 'first encounter' short but there's people I know in there and I think we need to leave pronto!" I told her. "Umm, okay. Where to then? Did you bring your car?" she asked me. "No, I took the bus. I have too many parking tickets and got my car taken away." I said "Well okay! Let's just go for a drive then and talk." I couldn't have been more relieved to get away from Logan and Aphrodite. That was one close call. *** "So I think we have a trace on our birth parents." Beatrix said out of the blue after we've been talking for what had been like an hour. What. The. Hell. "W-w-w-what do you mean?" I asked her. How could I be adopted? I looked so much like my parents! Well... apparently my adoptive parents? "Surely you know you're adopted? That wouldn't make sense for parents to give up just one child." She said. "Well, my parents haven't mentioned me being adopted! I mean, here," I pulled out a photo of my parents and I just to show Beatrix what they looked like. I didn't think I was going to need it to prove they were my real parents. "See! They look exactly like us." "Yeah, but how do you know exactly they're your parents? I mean, People say I look like Amy Winehouse but yet people don't jump to conclusions that we're sisters. Just because you look similar doesn't mean they are your parents. Besides, my adoptive mom gave me a name to go off of. Shontelle Lopez." "Wait, Lopez? I thought I was French! Not Mexican!" I was astonished. "Oh, Miss pretty girl wants to be French? How cute." She said in a snarky tone. "What's your problem?!" I asked her. "Sorry, I've been having some anger issues lately." "It's okay. So, is it alright to confront my parents then?" I asked. "If you want. If you do I might as well have to come with you if they try to defend themselves, which I don't see why they would." She said. "Well okay, but are you sure this is something we could go off of? I mean, there could be a hundred to a thousand Shontelle Lopez's in the United States." "It's worth a shot." *** We were right outside my house waiting to go inside. I don't know why I was so nervous but I was. Could I really be adopted? And who could this Shontelle Lopez be like? A murderer? An ex-convict? A nurse? The possibilities were endless! We went inside and I called out to make sure my parents were home. "Mom!!!! Dad!!!!!" I yelled. "We're in the kitchen sweetie!" I heard my mom call back. "Follow me, but wait in the hallway before the kitchen entrance." I told Beatrix. "Okay." I walked expecting nothing but a simple "Yes, honey, you are adopted" but knowing my parents they'd probably say I was crazy for believing that. "Uhh, Mom, Dad, am I adopted?" I blurted out. They looked at me with stunned looks. They both laughed. "Well of course not, Silvia. Why would you think that?" My mom asked. "Umm, well, Get in here Beatrix." I told her. She walked in slowly and my parents face grew serious. "What are you doing here?" My mom asked her. "What do you mean?" Beatrix asked her. "Who told you where we lived?" She asked growing impatient. "Uhh, she did." Beatrix said, pointing to me. "How did this happen? How did you contact her?" She was shooting out her questions like a machine gun. "Umm, f*******:. I found her on f*******: by accident after Eva sent a link telling me she looked exactly like me." I lied. "This doesn't make sense. I thought we left you in Los Angeles and lost all contact! It was a closed adoption. We never had any contact with your birth mother." My dad chimed in. "Can someone please tell me what the hell you're talking about?" Beatrix asked. "Silvia, you're not adopted. You are ours. You both are. When we found out we were having twins, we decided to give up one of you. We couldn't have handled two babies from the money we were making then. We decided to contact an adoption agency and have a closed adoption to seem like it never happened. We never thought that this would ever happen. We are so sorry!" My mom said, holding back tears. "That doesn't explain why it had to be me," Beatrix said "It seems like it was by random to see which one of us would be the adoptive child." "Well that's the thing," my mom said. "It was." "What. The. f**k. Mom!" I said. I couldn't believe it was by random! "WHY DID YOU DO THAT?" I started to yell. "Look! We're sorry! I felt bad it was done by random but I thought both of you would have a great life no matter which one went!" "Well look how that turned out. I'm living in Las Cruces with my adoptive aunt and uncle after being threatened that I was going to be killed." Beatrix said under her breath. "What was that? You got threatened to be killed?" My mom asked her. There was an awkward silence. "Are you gay?" My dad said out of the blue. "What the hell, Dad!" I said embarrassingly. "She's not gay! There were just creeps following her in Los Angeles ! That's all!" "Oh." Both of my parents said together. "Well, if you two are my real parents, then who's Shontelle Lopez?" Beatrix asked. "I don't know. Could be anyone." My mom said. "Okay then." "Well, so since she's family can she stay for however long she's visiting?" I asked them. "I guess that's fine." My dad said. My mom shot him a dirty look as if he said the wrong thing. "Yeah, I suppose that's fine. She can stay in the guest room if she wants." My mom said. "Well, sure!" Beatrix said in a cheerful manner. My parents went upstairs. "Let's go to the hotel and get your stuff!" I told her. As we left the house, my phone was about to die. "Hey, let me get my car charger right quick!" I told her. "No problem." I went in the house and quickly went upstairs. I passed by my parents room and heard them talking. I thought it wasn't anything until I heard my name. "You know we're going to have to tell Silvia and her sister sometime." I heard my dad tell my mom. "No, they don't know that Shontelle is dead. They can't do a thing and there would be no point in trying to find her. So they're at a dead-end." My mom answered in a dead serious tone. "I guess so, but you know how curious Silvia gets about anything." "They won't find out a thing." I couldn't believe this. They had lied to both of us! We both were adopted! And our mother was dead! I couldn't help but think "What. The. Fuck."
