The plan was moving forward, but the risks were growing. Logan had been making more trips into dangerous places, slipping into meetings with the gang to overhear their plans. Each time, Sophia waited anxiously for his return, her stomach tight with worry.
One night, Logan came back later than usual. When he walked into Sophia’s apartment, his face was pale, and a fresh cut ran across his cheek.
“What happened?” Sophia asked, rushing to him.
“Got too close this time,” Logan said, his voice low. He dropped into the chair, wincing as he leaned back. “They’re getting suspicious. One of them caught me looking through some files. I managed to talk my way out, but it was close.”
Sophia grabbed a first-aid kit and began cleaning the cut on his cheek. “You need to be more careful, Logan. If they catch you, it’s over.”
Logan watched her work, his expression soft despite the pain. “I know. But we’re so close, Sophia. I got more names tonight, more connections. It’s enough to start building a real case.”
Sophia sighed, her hands trembling slightly. “I don’t want to lose you, Logan. This is dangerous for both of us.”
He reached up, taking her hand gently. “I promised you we’d do this together. I’m not going anywhere.”
Sophia nodded, trying to steady herself. “Alright. Let’s look at what you found.”
Logan pulled a few folded papers from his pocket and spread them on the table. Sophia’s eyes widened as she read through them.
“These are bank records,” she said, her voice rising with excitement. “They show money being funneled to fake businesses. This connects them to so many crimes.”
Logan nodded. “It’s big, but we need more. They’ll deny everything unless we can prove these businesses are tied to them.”
Sophia thought for a moment, then looked at him. “What about the boss? The leader of the gang—does he ever show his face?”
Logan hesitated. “Rarely. But there’s a meeting tomorrow night. A big one. He’s supposed to be there.”
Sophia’s stomach clenched. “Are you going?”
“I have to,” Logan said firmly. “If I can get proof that he’s involved, it could be the final piece we need.”
Sophia shook her head, fear flashing in her eyes. “It’s too dangerous, Logan. If they’re already suspicious, you can’t take that risk.”
Logan reached for her hand again, his grip steady. “We don’t have a choice, Sophia. If we don’t stop them now, they’ll keep hurting people. I can handle it.”
She looked at him, her heart heavy with worry but also with pride. “Then promise me you’ll be careful.”
“I promise,” Logan said, his voice soft but determined.
That night, as he left for the meeting, Sophia stood at the window, watching him disappear into the night. She whispered a silent prayer, hoping he would come back to her safe and sound.
But deep down, she knew this would be their most dangerous move yet.
