The Thief’s Warning

571 Words
Sophia couldn’t shake the memory of that night. The narrow alley, the glint of steel in the mugger’s hand, and then him—Logan. He had appeared like a phantom, his movements swift and precise. In moments, the danger was gone, and she was left staring at a man whose presence was as unsettling as it was magnetic. The following day, she replayed the encounter in her mind, dissecting every detail. Who was he? Why had he been there? Most of all, why couldn’t she stop thinking about him? Sophia's workday passed in a blur of paperwork and court filings, but her focus wavered. By evening, she found herself walking the same route as the night before, her steps tentative. The alley was eerily silent, its shadows stretching like dark fingers. "You shouldn’t be here," a voice murmured, low and familiar. Startled, she turned. Logan emerged from the darkness, his hands tucked casually into his coat pockets. "Do you make a habit of wandering into dangerous places?" he asked, his tone half-amused, half-chiding. Sophia crossed her arms, mustering her courage. "I wanted to thank you properly." Logan raised an eyebrow. "Thanks accepted. Now go home." But she didn’t move. Something about him intrigued her, and against her better judgment, she pressed further. "You don’t strike me as the Good Samaritan type. Why did you help me?" He smirked, a flicker of mischief in his eyes. "Let’s just say I have a soft spot for reckless lawyers." Her cheeks flushed, but she held her ground. "You know who I am?" "I make it a point to know everything about the people in my neighborhood," he replied cryptically. Sophia frowned. "And what exactly do you do in this neighborhood, Logan?" His name slipped from her lips as if she had always known it. Logan froze for a moment, his expression unreadable. "You ask a lot of questions," he said, his voice softening. "Let me give you one answer: I’m not someone you want to get involved with." "Why not?" she challenged. He hesitated, his gaze locking onto hers. "Because my life isn’t safe. And people who get close to me... they pay the price." Sophia should have walked away then. She should have thanked him again, left the alley, and never looked back. But instead, she stepped closer. "Maybe I’m willing to take that risk," she said quietly. For a moment, Logan looked at her as though she were something fragile and precious—something he didn’t deserve. "You don’t even know me," he whispered. "Then let me," she replied. Logan shook his head, his jaw tightening. "You’re stubborn. I can see that already. But take this as your warning, Sophia: my world is nothing like yours. It’s dark, unpredictable, and dangerous. If you keep looking for me, you might not like what you find." With that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her standing alone, her heart pounding. But Sophia knew one thing for sure—this wasn’t the last time she’d see Logan Carter.
