The next evening, Sophia stood in the park, her heart racing. The sky was dark, and the cold wind nipped at her cheeks. She hugged her coat tightly around herself, glancing around nervously. She wasn’t sure what to expect from Logan, but she was determined to hear his story.
“Right on time,” Logan’s voice called out.
She turned to see him step out from the shadows. He looked the same as always—calm, confident, but with a shadow of sadness in his eyes.
“I thought you might not show up,” she admitted.
He gave her a faint smile. “I don’t break my promises.”
They sat on a nearby bench, the park quiet around them. Logan leaned back, his hands resting on his knees, and stared ahead.
“You wanted the truth,” he began. “So here it is. I wasn’t always like this. I used to have a normal life—a job, a family. But everything changed a few years ago.”
Sophia listened carefully, her heart aching at the pain in his voice.
“My younger brother, Caleb, got into trouble with the wrong people,” Logan continued. “He owed them money—more than we could ever pay. When they came after him, I had to do something. So I made a deal with them. I would work for them, steal for them, if they let Caleb go.”
“And did they?” Sophia asked softly.
Logan nodded. “They did, but not without a price. I became their tool, their thief. Every job I’ve done since then has been for them. If I stop, they’ll come after Caleb—or worse, they’ll come after me. And if I get caught by the police, it’s over.”
Sophia’s mind raced as she tried to process everything. Logan wasn’t stealing for himself; he was doing it to protect his family.
“That’s why I keep pushing you away,” Logan said, his voice heavy. “I don’t want you getting caught up in this. It’s too dangerous.”
Sophia reached out and placed a hand on his arm. “You don’t have to do this alone, Logan. We can figure this out together.”
He shook his head. “It’s not that simple, Sophia. These people don’t play by the rules. And even if I wanted to leave, they’d never let me.”
Sophia thought for a moment, her determination growing. “Then we find a way to stop them. You’re not the only one they’ve hurt. If we can gather enough evidence, we can bring them down.”
Logan looked at her, a mix of hope and fear in his eyes. “You don’t know what you’re saying. These people are dangerous, Sophia. They won’t hesitate to hurt you.”
“I’m not afraid,” she said firmly. “You saved me, Logan. Now let me save you.”
For a long moment, Logan said nothing. Then, finally, he nodded. “Alright,” he said quietly. “If we’re doing this, we do it carefully. No risks, no mistakes.”
Sophia smiled, her resolve unwavering. “Then let’s get started.”
