Maddie
I slowly opened my eyes, feeling the brightness of the environment bothering me. The hospital lights were bright, and I blink a few times to adjust. As I looked around, I realized I was in a white, sterile, and quiet room, and the voices of the doctors talking to my mother were distant.
I wiggled my fingers and toes, checking my body. There was no pain. In fact, I felt incredibly good, despite everything I remembered happening in the college cafeteria. I remembered the incident with Derek, the humiliation, the anger, and the moment everything went black.
"Are you awake?" My mother’s voice sounded relieved and emotional. I turned my head to see her, her eyes brimming with tears of joy.
“Mum?” I asked, my voice hoarse and weak. “What happened? I… I remember everything. But I’m fine. How is that possible?”
I remembered literally burning down the college cafeteria…
“I’ll leave you alone. Just press the button, and I’ll appear,” said the doctor kindly, and my mother nodded, seeing him leave with the nurse. She approached me soon after and held my hand firmly.
“Maddie, I know you must be terribly confused right now. There’s something you need to know. Something I should have told you a long time ago.”
I frowned, confusion growing in my mind.
“What? What are you talking about?”
My mother nodded.
“You are special, Maddie. From the moment you were born, I knew you were different. Your grandmother was actually a psychic, and she told me that you are a reincarnation of a powerful Luna. I never fully understood what that meant, but I always knew there was something special about you.”
I was silent for a moment, trying to process my mother’s words.
“A Luna? What do you mean? That seems… surreal. Lunas don’t even exist anymore…” I bubbled.
I was actually stuttering in surprise. Lunas had become so rare that they became extinct, and now only the Alphas ruled the world. But was my mother saying I was a reincarnation of Luna?
Mom sighed.
“I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth. You have powers, Maddie. Powers that go beyond what any of us can understand. And now, it seems those powers are awakening.”
I felt a mixture of fear and curiosity. I didn’t know what to think, but somehow, I felt like my mother’s words were grotesquely true. Somehow, everything makes sense in my life now. All those times I looked in the mirror and felt that something in me was much deeper than I could imagine; all those times that strange things happened to me, was it because I actually had a sleeping Luna inside me? The most powerful spirit ever seen…
“And what do I do now?” I stammered, still lost and shocked.
“First, you need to calm down and rest. A lot is going on, and you need time to understand it all,” she said, stroking my face and trying to comfort me.
As I reflected on what my mother had just said, I began to remember the past few months. I always felt like there was something different about me, like there was a latent force waiting to manifest. There were times when I felt a deep connection with nature, especially during full moon nights. Now, these sensations make sense.
“But why now, Mum? Why are these powers manifesting now?” I asked, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
“I don’t have all the answers, honey,” my mother replied. “But I believe that recent events—your disappointment with Derek and the emotional stress—have triggered something inside you. Something dormant.”
I nodded, understanding. I felt a new responsibility weighing on my shoulders. Not only that, but I needed to understand more about this powerful Luna my mother talked about. Who was she? What were her powers? And most importantly, how could I control and use these powers for good?
A short time later, the hospital room door opened, revealing Dereck. He looked nervous, apparently regretful and worried.
“Maddie… I was there when it happened. I brought you to the hospital when you passed out. I… I’m so sorry.”
I looked at him, my heart clenching with the pain of betrayal.
“Derek, I… I’m really hurt by what you did. It won’t be easy for me to forgive you. You used me for a bet.”
Derek hung his head, shame evident on his face.
“I know. I made a terrible mistake. I was being stupid and insensitive. But I really like you, Maddie. I never wanted to hurt you like that.”
I felt tears form in my eyes.
“I need time. I need to understand what’s happening to me and decide what to do. I don’t know if I can forgive you now. Hell, I can’t even look at your face…”
Derek nodded, respecting my space.
“I understand. I just want you to know that I’m truly sorry,” he said, but it was still too recent to even consider his words. What he had done to me still hurt a lot, so even though he was asking for forgiveness, I still wasn’t strong enough to forgive him.
“If you are truly sorry, you will understand my position and leave me alone from now on. You don’t know what girl you messed with, Dereck. You just shouldn’t have done what you did to any girl,” I told him, still angry.
He swallowed hard, his moss-green eyes still on me, deeply hurt.
“I take all my blame, Maddie. I just want you to forgive me. It may not be today or tomorrow, but I will wait patiently for your forgiveness,” he said.
I nodded without saying anything else.
“Could you leave now, please? My daughter needs to get some rest,” my mother told him.
He nodded.
“Sure, I am really sorry, ma’am,” he said to my mother and then to me. “So... See you later, Maddie.”
“Goodbye, Derek,” I replied, still bitter.
He left the room, and I sighed heavily, feeling my heart broken. Maybe I would never heal or love again. Everything was a mess...
“It’s going to be okay, sweetheart. You will find a way to solve all this. I am here with you,” my mother said affectionately, and I hugged her tightly. I was actually so scared. Likewise, I was thoughtful. I knew I needed to step away to understand everything that was going on about me being a reborn Luna and everything. So I decided that I would spend some time outside the city, in the countryside where my grandma lived before she died, to reflect and discover more about my true identity. I felt like there was more hidden in it, like layers of questions that needed answers. I needed to achieve my own alignment with myself.
Furthermore, I smiled at my mom, watching her make calls after I told her I wanted to go to grandma’s house. She loved the idea and was already planning everything for our trip. While I was still in the hospital, my cell phone vibrated. It was a message from Stephen:
“I hope you get better soon, Maddie. I’m rooting for you.”
I was surprised to receive his text wishing me recovery, but after how he looked after me before, I didn’t doubt his kindness. Furthermore, I smiled, remembering how kind he was to me the day I found out about Dereck’s bet. Maybe Stephen was a good person and someone I could truly trust.
