Feigning Sleep

[EVA POV]

Once Dane left, I took a nice bath. My wolf, Ellie, told me she would let me know when he was close by, so I wouldn’t be caught in a compromising position. This cottage was amazing. All these years of sleeping on a mat on the floor, I now had a large comfy bed and my own cottage. I guess being Alpha’s secret has its perks.

I lay on the bed and couldn’t remember ever being this comfortable before. My body was relaxing. The scent of Alpha Dane was strong in the bedroom, which annoyed me. It was annoying because my body wanted to write in pleasure with just his scent. He must’ve set this up by himself to make sure I could smell him everywhere.

I’d just managed to doze off when I heard someone unlock the door. I knew it was Alpha Dane because I felt my wolf stirring. She grumbled softly in my mind. I kept my eyes closed, and my breath slowed, so I would appear asleep. The door opened silently. Alpha Dane moved in impossible silence. The only way I knew he was approaching the bed was our mate bond strumming wildly in his presence. His fingertips ran across my exposed arm, and I fought a shiver. I made sure not to react to his touch. If I’d been asleep, my body would naturally react to my mate.

“Little mate.” Alpha Dane huffed out as he buried his nose into my neck, taking in my scent. I kept my body stiff. I heard him make an annoyed grunt as he went into the adjoining bathroom.

He smelled like her. My wolf complained.

I know. I am surprised he went to her. I replied.

They didn’t do anything. We would’ve felt the betrayal pains. I think he didn’t even let her touch him. Their scents aren’t mixed enough. My wolf was pacing in my mind.

I felt melancholic for my wolf. Of course, she yearns for her mate. It is natural for a wolf to be completely consumed by their mate bond. I feel horrible for making her resist it.

Don’t feel bad Eva. It’s his fault. My mate is trash. She grumbled while she continued to pace.

Do you think he’s going to try and sleep in here with us? I asked my wolf.

Probably. My wolf gritted out.

I guess we will be getting no rest tonight. I complained.

It will be hard not to when next to our mate. But if we sleep, our body will naturally react to the mate bond. We’ll end up cuddled into our mate like a pathetic she-wolf. She huffed clearly, very agitated.

Well, we will have plenty of time to chat. I suggested. This seemed to settle my wolf briefly.

Then the door of the bathroom opened. I scolded myself for wanting to peek over. To just get a glimpse of our mate glistening from his shower…no.

“How can you be sleeping so soundly little mate?” His voice was gentle. Completely foreign from how Alpha Dane usually speaks.

“Leah put herself in the hospital tonight just to lure me out. She knew as the alpha I had to come. She was never this manipulative when we were younger. I think being Luna ruined her.” He continued complaining about Leah.

“She wasn’t meant to be a Luna. She was never supposed to be my mate,” he admitted, continuing his one-sided conversation. I could hear the irritation in his voice.

This is good drama. My wolf joked.

It would be if we weren’t involved. I joked back.

“I’ve been waiting for this night since I met you. I’ve wondered how I would feel, how you would react, what I should do about it. Hell, I’ve gone through every scenario. But you…you don’t seem to recognize the mate bond.” His voice grew dark with every word. I felt him sit on the bed.

“Don’t worry little mate. I will see if there are any records of not being able to sense out your mate. I will fix this.” I felt him lean over and place a light kiss on my temple.

The sensations that flooded through our mate bond were overwhelming. I don’t know how I managed to stay still and relaxed. I was both elated and disgusted. I couldn’t help but wonder if he’d kissed Leah with those lips earlier.

I doubt it. My wolf interjected my mental spiral.

“I can’t wait to see your cute face when you realize I’m your mate.” Alpha Dane basically purred into my neck.

Does he think we will be happy to learn that our mate is married and mated? My wolf snorted, distracting me from the waves of pleasure radiating from his presence on my neck.

And that he has treated me as a servant my whole life. I added.

Alpha Dane did indeed sleep next to me. He climbed in behind me and spooned me all night. My wolf was right when she said it would be hard to stay awake. I felt myself being lulled to sleep often throughout the night only to be jolted back by my wolf. His deep and steady breathing was comforting. The rhythmic sound of his heartbeat was like a lullaby just for me. I wanted to gag at how cringey the mate bond made me feel.

Elle and I spent all night gabbing. Well, when I wasn’t nodding off to sleep. It was how I imagined sleepovers with your best friends must go. We talked about everything all at once. I couldn’t stop thanking her for being my wolf. It was nice to finally have someone on my side.

When night fell and the moonlight began to beam through the window, I felt Alpha Dane stir. I kept my act going and pretended to be blissfully asleep. He cautiously got out of bed and left. Only then did I allow myself to sleep.

Unfortunately, I didn’t sleep for too long. Around midnight, I groggily got out of bed. I was momentarily confused by my surroundings.

Oh yeah. Dane gave us a cottage. I reminded myself.

Treating his mate like his mistress. My wolf huffed out.

It’s better than a mat on the floor. I admitted.

I looked in the closet. I was surprised to find some clothes. Nice clothes at that.

Should I be unnerved that he knows my size? I questioned my wolf.

If he was a good mate, I would say no, but he’s garbage, so yes, be unnerved. My wolf sassed.

I got dressed and stretched. My stomach growled, and I checked the small kitchen to find the basic supplies in the cabinets.

He really thought this out. I said to my wolf, making her snort.

I didn’t leave my new cottage for an hour or so. I didn’t know if I’d been excused from work today, but since no one had reached out, I figured I’d risk it. I guess it is a good way to test what I can get away with now. I made it to the house I shared with Dane and Leah. I was thankful it seemed no one was home. I guess he really kicked Leah out for a week.

I didn’t have much, but I had a few things I wanted to keep. So, I tiptoed up to my joke of a room. I bundled up my things. I was teasing myself for sneaking around when I knew no one was home when I heard the front door open from two floors below me. Damn.

Leah. My wolf said her name full of bile.

Do you think she knows I am here? I questioned.

Since you just shifted, your smell is much stronger and I wasn’t trying to mask your scent. So, probably. But she is an i***t. My wolf sassed.

“Mutt! I know you’re here!” Leah’s shrill voice echoed through the giant house.

Well, there’s my answer. I said to my wolf.

I didn’t respond until I reached the landing where she was already slinging things around. She was in full tantrum mode. It was harder to hide my laughter than it was to hide my mate bond from Dane.

“Welcome home Luna,” I said politely. However, I didn’t bow. I am an alpha wolf now. I will need to take a new oath to my Alpha and Luna now that I have gained an Alpha-ranked wolf.

“Bow to me, you wretched beast.” She shrieked and flung a nearby vase at me. I casually dodged the projectile.

“My wolf has made no oath to you,” I said with a wicked grin.

She leaped at me. Her claws were already extended. I effortlessly moved out of the way. Gaining my wolf has made my reflexes much faster. My instincts were better, and my movements were way more agile than before.

“Stop moving you slimy weasel,” Leah yelled while trying to s***h wildly at me. I wanted to laugh. She had access to training. I had very limited to non-existent training. Luna was the Luna of the Red Sun pack for the Goddess’ sake. Yet, she couldn’t get one hit in.

“I am not your personal punching bag, Luna,” I said calmly continuing to dodge her frantic swings.

“You’re whatever I want you to be, you homewrecker!” She screamed out.

“Homewrecker?” I questioned while allowing a laugh to escape.

“You’ve been trying to seduce my mate for years!” she accused.

“Seduce?” I asked amused. We continued our dance the room, becoming utter chaos around us as she ran into things and threw things.

“Don’t try to deny it sl*t.” She yelled.

Hello, Alpha. I don’t know if I am mindlinking right. But your wife is destroying your house. I decided to take a brief moment to send a mindlink to Dane. At least, I think that’s what I was doing.

In my moment of delay, Leah landed a solid strike on my face. A triumphant smile took over her face. I decided I’d let her get some more hits. She was too enraged to consider why she was suddenly getting punch after slap after kick on me. Until I felt the mate bond vibrate. I looked up at her and smiled briefly before the sound of the door clicked.
