[EVA POV]
Sometimes the world moves in slow motion. I was glad this moment was one of those times. It was glorious to see Leah’s smug face flush in utter horror. All the red color on her face paled. Her eyes widened in fear.
“Leah.” Alpha Dane’s low growl even entered my brain slowly. Like an opera ready to reach its climax.
I made myself collapse to the floor dramatically. I even released a tremble to really sell it.
“Dane.” I barely heard Leah’s voice. The scent of fear filled the air.
I kept my head down. I let out a couple of coughs. Maybe I was overdoing the acting. But I did take quite a few hits. She brought this on herself. My gaze snapped up when I heard a crashing noise.
Dane threw Leah through the wall. She broke through the plaster and now laid in a heap in the next room. She groaned and let out a sob.
“Dane,” Leah whimpered. She ran her hand over her stomach.
“Don’t play that card Leah. How many times have I told you? I would be able to scent my heir. If you’re insisting there’s a pup there, it isn’t mine.” His words were venomous. If it wasn’t Leah, I would feel horrible for her.
“Why are you doing this to me, Dane?” Leah sobbed.
“Because you won’t listen Leah. How many times do I have to tell you to leave Eva alone? She is a part of this pack. You can’t treat pack members this way. You are supposed to be the Luna,” he shouted, releasing his Alpha aura. When it hit me, I was shocked.
Usually, an Alpha’s aura is used to make others submit or follow an order. I’d felt it before. I’d felt Alpha Dane use it before. But now...now it feels like pressure building in my stomach. Similar to that feeling of coming completely undone by pleasure.
I felt my jaw tense as my teeth clenched. I made myself lower down to feign submission to Dane’s aura. A pained whimper left my lips. Dane touched my back gently, making me shudder from the sparks. I heaved out a sob to mask my reaction.
“Leah. You were in the hospital just last night insisting it was an emergency. Yet here you are today, seemingly fine.” The ice in Dane’s voice scared me slightly.
“I was having so much pain in my stomach. I thought …” Leah sobbed out before Dane snapped.
“For the last time Leah. You are not pregnant. You will never carry my pup!” Dane snarled.
I wish I could’ve gotten a look at Leah’s reaction, but I was still acting as though Alpha Dane’s aura still had me pinned down. Then I was swept up into Dane’s arms. My eyes widened in shock as I stared at him.
“No!” Leah shrieked. Her voice was shrill and full of fear.
Leah ran over to where Alpha Dane and I were standing. Her eyes were red and wet with tears. The look on her face was a mix of fear and fury. Her teeth were extended and her claws still out. Before she could try and pry me out of Dane’s arms, Alpha Dane pushed out more of his aura, knocking her back landing on her butt.
Simultaneously, I felt the push of his aura pulsating between my legs. I hid my face in his chest to appear submissive. Luckily. I was already shaking…just not in fear…I was shaking from pure pleasure from the stupid mate bond.
“Alpha…” I croaked out weakly. I needed to get out of here. More importantly, I needed to get out of his grasp before I snapped.
Alpha Dane responded by carrying me out of the house. He carried me back to my cottage, ignoring my insistence on letting me walk. He was still radiating power and rage. If Leah hadn’t full on attacked me earlier, I would feel bad.
Once we returned to the little cottage in the woods, I now call my own. Alpha Dance finally laid me down gently. His hand gently glided across my face and through my hair. I watched as this gesture seemed to melt away the lingering anger on his face. A smile even came over his lips.
“Your wolf is a strong one,” he mused. I could see the obvious tinge of pride crossing his eyes.
“She said flattery doesn’t affect her.” I shared the message from Ellie.
“You seem to have healed completely already. Leah hits very hard. I know the damage her strikes can deal. Yet you’ve already recovered,” Dane explained, looking me over. I heard my wolf scoff in my head.
“Alpha… do you think it would be possible for me to work back at the packhouse? I don’t think I should be around you too much. Luna… Luna said I was a homewrecker.” I faked a sob. He growled low and deep.
Before he could answer, a knock came from the door. I was confused, but Alpha Dane didn’t seem confused. A tall and lean woman came in. Her long red hair was tied up in a bun.
“Eva, this is Stella, one of the new pack healers. I requested her transfer to our pack earlier.” Alpha Dane introduced.
Stella was beautiful and looked refined. However, her smile was youthful, transforming her look from regal to playful. She reached her slender hand out to me. Without thinking, I ignored her hand and stepped closer to her and began to…sniff her. She let out a light laugh.
“You just shifted, haven’t you?” she stated.
Why did I just…sniff her? I asked my wolf. I was slightly embarrassed of my actions.
It’s natural for a wolf to scent someone they first meet. My wolf said. She sounded like she didn’t understand what the deal was.
“I’m sorry.” I apologized, feeling myself blush.
“It’s ok. It’s normal for newly shifted werewolves to take on their wolf impulses more in the beginning. It’ll settle down,” she assured me. She was looking me over.
“Uh…it’s nice to meet you,” I said.
“You as well.” She nodded with a grin. “Alpha Dane said you’d been attacked a few minutes ago by the Luna, but you look fine.” She continued with confusion and intrigue in her voice.
“Um…” I wasn’t sure what to say.
“Eva is a strong alpha wolf,” Dane said with a smirk. He sounded so proud. Anyone who didn’t know the truth would think he’s a proud dotting father. Not a married man proud of his secret fated mate.
“My wolf is amazing.” I gloated with a smile.
“I can tell.” Stella agreed.
“Sorry you had to come out tonight.” I apologized to her.
“No problem at all. We will have to meet tomorrow to get to know each other,” Stella said.
“Oh, I have to get back to my work tomorrow,” I said sadly.
“Maybe you could work under Stella for a while,” Alpha Dane suggested.
I almost missed the brief glance between Dane and Stella. This was his plan. For some reason he wanted me to be around Stella…but why?
Remember what he said last night when he was whining about us not realizing he’s our mate blah blah blah. My wolf interjected my thoughts.
‘Don’t worry little mate. I will see if there are any records of not being able to sense out your mate. I will fix this.’ I remembered his words.
Stella is some kind of healer, so maybe she specializes in mate bonds or something? I suggested.
Maybe. I don’t trust her…but I like her… My wolf huffed. My wolf is so sassy.
“I would love that! If she doesn’t mind though,” I said excitedly. Honestly, I was just glad to be working away from Leah…and away from Alpha. Even if Stella is one of his minions.
“Of course. I would love some assistance. I have my own section at the pack hospital to set up. My work is more specialized, so I will need some help to adjust. And it will be great to have a friend in my new pack,” She said with her mischievous smile.
