[EVA'S POV]
Now that we were on the same page regarding our mate…for now at least, my wolf and I spent hours talking. My wolf radiated power, but she got so excited when I told her about different places I'd put on my list of ‘places to go’. She wagged her tail as I told her about all the amazing sights I'd researched. I’ve spent most of my life in relative confinement with Alpha Dane, so I’ve always obsessively researched places I’d visit when I could go out into the world on my own. Though considering what I know now, I doubt I would’ve ever had the chance to leave.
“We will go wherever we want,” my wolf said sternly. I was learning that she was very strong in the head. I could only chuckle at her infectious boldness.
“I am so glad I have you now,” I admitted. Ellie’s ears shot straight up and her tail moved to a defensive position.
“Dane is coming.” She commented before vanishing. I missed seeing her beautiful star-like fur. I sensed the tingles of the mate bond as Dane parted the tree line.
“There you are,” he said with a suspicious gentleness. Alpha Dane has never been violent or outraged towards me, but he isn’t a gentle person. He’s strict, ruthless, and intense.
“I was having the best time with my wolf! Do I have to go back yet?” I tried to sound overly excited about my wolf. Anything that might buy me a little more time away from him.
“You have the rest of your life to chat with your wolf. Now is time to return home,” he insisted. The continued gentleness in his voice was prickling my skin. I was being torn between desire and disgust. His voice made me want to snuggle him and snap at him for acting so out of character. As much as I want to call him out for his bizarre kindness, I don’t want to push him to mention our bond.
“Ok,” I said reluctantly and pouted slightly. When I looked up at Dane’s face, I almost collapsed. He was staring at my bottom lip with an intense expression.
No more pouting for me. I mentioned to my wolf.
I followed him, making sure to stay slightly behind him. I didn’t want to leave a chance for our hands to bump each other or something cringy like that. I went on and on about how awesome and cool my wolf is. I was trying to be annoying and childlike. Then I noticed we were turning the wrong direction towards the mansion.
“Alpha Dane. The house is this way,” I said, pointing in the direction of the house. I’d stopped walking at this point.
“I have something to show you.” Dane’s voice was still laced with gentleness, but something else more passionate as well.
He took my hand and I nearly broke. The tingles came, followed by a wave of primal want rushed over me. All of this over our hands touching. I made sure to look down and stay slightly behind him to hide any sign of my desire. I needed him to think I felt nothing, so I couldn’t just pull my hand away.
He is pushing out his pheromones. My wolf huffed.
Is that why his touch feels so much more intense than earlier? I asked.
Yes. He’s challenging our resolve. Ellie snorted out.
My wolf seems to enjoy a challenge. She did something because I suddenly felt nothing but a faint pulse of our mate bond through our hands. I didn’t even smell Dane’s delicious scent now.
What are you doing? I asked, completely amazed at my wolf.
We can swap control of our senses. This usually causes a partial shift for werewolves, but we are different. She gloated. I was thankful to be paired with such a fantastic wolf spirit. She was so strong that it was clear. However, I could feel the subtle strain in her voice as she was experiencing the full impact of our mate bond and whatever tricks Dane was trying to use.
“You’re quiet all of a sudden,” Alpha Dane commented.
“I’m chatting with my wolf. I didn’t know I could do that and walk,” I explained. I wasn’t lying technically. Alpha Dane smiled, but I could see something darker in his eyes. He was becoming more agitated that I wasn’t acknowledging the bond between us.
“What’s your wolf’s name?” Alpha Dane asked.
He doesn’t deserve to know. Eluvite huffed.
“She told me not to tell you.” I let out a playful giggle. This choice seemed to backfire a bit when Alpha Dane seemed to like my playful demeanor.
“She refused to tell me or my wolf earlier.” He mentioned continuing to lead me down this unknown path.
“She said you have to earn it,” I said.
“She’s a feisty one.” I almost flinched at his amused tone. I could tell he was very taken in by my spunky wolf. I mean she is clearly the best, but I don’t want him acting all smitten.
“She’s the best,” I declared proudly. I began to annoyingly ramble about my wolf again.
Alpha Dane’s pace began to slow, indicating that we had approached our destination. I looked around his broad muscular frame to see a small cottage nestled between the trees. It looked like something straight out of the story books I loved so much as a child. I almost let the fluttering feeling in my chest take over, but I focused back on Dane.
“This is my gift to you,” Alpha Dane stated while gesturing to the cottage. My eyes widened in excitement before I fully registered the implications.
“You and Luna are gifting me a house?” I said, letting the excitement tinge my words. I made sure to mention his Luna.
“No not Leah. I would prefer Leah not to know where you are.” My heartbeat stammered at his words.
Steady. My wolf said.
“Luna will need help with her pup soon.” I mentioned the potential pup they’ve been ‘trying’ for so desperately.
That got a reaction. Alpha Dane snapped his head around his eyes, full of masked rage.
“There will be no pup.” Dane gritted out.
“Of course, there will be with how active you are together.” I forced out a light chuckle. “I hear you almost every night,” I added. His eyes almost went entirely black.
“Leah…is… Leah has wants…she is my…” He was struggling to speak and hide his rage.
“Your mate?” I offered.
Alpha Dane let out a low growl as he hoisted me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. He began carrying me into the small cottage. I wish I had a moment to take in the interior, but I was fighting with my urge to give in to the temptation of the mate bond.
Dane let me down, then pushed me into the wall of the cottage. He buried his nose into my neck, taking in my scent. He was reassuring himself that I was his mate.
Ignoring him makes him think he’s crazy. My wolf sounded amused. I wish I could revel in the amusement as well, but I was struggling to keep my composure. I was doing my best to keep myself from submitting my neck to him.
“Are you ok?” I asked. “You’re acting weird.”
“You…” Dane spoke, then moved his head back to look me in the eyes. When our eyes met, my breath hitched.
“You’re scaring me.” I covered my reaction. He was scaring me to an extent. He cannot know that he’s making my body radiate with a forbidden passion.
“Eva.” His voice came out laced with lust. Just saying my name was like he was asking me why I wouldn’t notice he was my mate.
“Look. You’re clearly stressed by work and everything going on with Luna. I know how much you love each other and bring apart from each other like this can’t be easy.” I rested my hand on his shoulder. I felt the warmth bloom from my palm. I was using our mate bond to calm him while acting oblivious.
