Natalie remembers the days leading up to the wedding as a blur.
Despite the frenzy of preparations, she found herself frequently ruminating about her decision to go.
Every time she saw Lucas playing in the backyard or tucked him into bed at night, she felt a surge of purpose.
On the morning of the wedding, Natalie got up early. Her bedroom window was filled with a soft glow as the sun started to rise.
She took extraordinary care when choosing her clothes, going for a comfortable yet stylish look.
An emotion of impatience grew inside her as she stood in front of the mirror, fiddling with her hair and makeup.
Lucas was particularly quiet that morning, perhaps sensing his mother's unhappiness.
When she had done getting ready, he observed her with interested eyes.
Lucas asked her, "Mommy, why are we going to the wedding?" as she bent over to knot his tiny bow tie.
Natalie gave him a kind smile and brushed a stray hair off his forehead.
"My dear, we're going because it's significant.
It's sometimes necessary to confront the past in order to move on. And it's one of those days now.
With a thoughtful nod, Lucas's impressionable mind took in everything she had spoken.
"Will I see my dad there?"
Natalie reassured him, "Yes, you will," her voice calmed despite a flutter of nervousness in her chest.
Just as the guests were beginning to assemble, they arrived at the location.
In the throng, Natalie recognized faces she recognized: family members whose absence had left a hole in her heart, as well as friends she hadn't seen in years.
She felt a mixture of feelings as she made her way through the garden towards the ceremony area: Anger, nervousness, and a quiet determination to see things through.
Clara watched Natalie approach, her mind whirling with a mix of terror and shock, her pulse pounding in her chest.
Was that her, really? The Natalie who had vanished from her life seven years ago? She had worked so hard to conceal the memories, but they suddenly came flooding back.
Natalie was there in front of Clara with a playful gleam in her eyes before she could gather her thoughts.
Clara stuttered out a query, unable to hide her surprise, her voice quivering.
"N-Natalie, why are you in this place? How were you even aware of my engagement celebration?"
Natalie's chuckles sliced like a scalpel through the tension.
"Oh, Clara, always so easily rattled," she remarked, a sarcastic tone gushing through her mouth.
Did you truly believe that I wouldn't discover?
Though you might have believed you could move on from the past, karma always finds a way to catch up with you." Natalie's remarks made Clara's blood run cold.
She was acutely aware of the betrayal and suffering she had inflicted upon Natalie seven years prior.
However, she never imagined Natalie would appear here, at this precise moment, threatening to destroy her the way she had previously been destroyed.
Clara straightened her back and met Natalie's stare, her fear turning to rage.
"What do you want, Natalie?" Her voice trembling with rage and defiance, she demanded.
With a harsh edge to her features, Natalie's smile grew larger.
"What am I in search of? Oh, Clara, you'll learn soon enough," she remarked, her tone laced with ill will.
"Take this as a warning.
I'm here to make sure you pay for what you did to me, even if you may have felt like you got away with it."
After making that menacing pronouncement, Natalie pivoted on her heel and vanished into the throng, taking her chair, and leaving Clara standing, shaky and uneasy.
Clara couldn't get rid of the sensation of dread that had formed in the pit of her stomach as the party's sounds encircled her.
It was obvious that Natalie was not to be taken lightly, regardless of what she had planned.
And Clara was aware that she would need to exercise caution if she wanted to weather the impending storm.
Clara's mind was racing as she sat in her chair, wondering what Natalie's sudden appearance meant.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't even realize Ethan was getting close until he gave her a gentle pat on the back, which made her start a little.
"Clara, are you okay?" With a concerned frown, Ethan enquired.
Clara produced a false smile, but it quickly covered up her nervousness.
She tried to appear casual as she said, "I'm fine, just thinking about everything."
Ethan gave her a tender hug.
"This evening is going to be fantastic. Let's start the celebration now."
They declared the engagement party open, and before long, music, laughter, and lively conversation filled the space.
While mixing with the visitors, Clara continued to be uneasy about Natalie's presence.
Though she was able to maintain her composure, her thoughts were anything from at ease.
Natalie was attempting to enjoy the celebration in the meantime, but she was troubled by Lucas's incessant inquiries concerning his father.
Lucas pulled at her sleeve as they turned to go.
My father isn't here, Mom, why? Furthermore, why did you not introduce me to anyone else?
His innocent question had Natalie bend down to his level, her heart pounding.
There's no need to introduce yourself today, Lucas.
Today is a happy day for your aunt Clara. In addition, I was unable to present your father to you because he was not present.
Lucas gave a sad look, but he gave a sympathetic nod.
"All right, Mom. Perhaps on a different day."
Natalie saw Marco coming as she got to her feet. He gazed at her, somewhat perplexed.
"What about Natalie? How come you're here? Do you know Ethan and Clara?
"Yes," Natalie answered in a tone that was impartial. "But the tale is lengthy.
What say you? What brings you here?"
"My manager of the company is Ethan. "I told him I would be at his engagement party," Marco clarified.
Natalie gave a nod. "That makes sense. I recognized a few of the employees here after seeing the invitation at the office."
They engaged in casual talk for some time, but there was a tension behind it.
Natalie excused herself as soon as she noticed Ethan getting closer.
"I ought to bring Lucas home. It was an exhausting day Naturally.
"Take care, Natalie," Marco replied.
Ethan walked over to Marco as Natalie and Lucas were leaving.
"Mr. Satini, thank you for coming. Thank you so much for that.
Marco grinned. "I'm glad to help, Ethan. Once more, congratulations."
Ethan cast a quick peek in Natalie's direction.
"Who was the lady you were talking with?"
Marco answered, "She's our new head of the architecture department."
"Once you're back at the office, I'll make sure to formally introduce you two."
Ethan nodded, content with the response. "That sounds fine. Once more, Mr.Marco, thank you."
Clara couldn't help but observe the fleeting conversation between Ethan and Marco as the celebration went on.
She pushed the question out of her mind for the moment, wondering what it was about.
With Natalie hovering over her, she had more than enough to worry about.
Clara tried her hardest to keep her thoughts on the festivities for the remainder of the evening, but her happiness was clouded by the realization that Natalie had returned with the express purpose of upsetting her.
She knew that sooner or later, she would have to face the past and face the fallout from her actions seven years prior, but until then, all she could do was hope to weather the storm that was certain to arrive.
