*CHAPTER 21: THE ALPHA AT MY GATE* The border wards didn’t just flare. They screamed. A low, bone-deep hum vibrated through the stone walls of my office, rattling the ink in my pen. Red light bled through the shutters. Midnight. I’d been Luna for 4 years. In that time, the wards had only gone red twice. Once for a rogue attack. Once for a pup born during a blood moon. Kade didn’t knock. He shouldered the door open, breath fogging in the cold air. "Luna Kiara. It’s him." My wolf surged forward, claws out, tail wagging. _Traitor._ I set my pen down slowly. The supply reports for the southern villages could wait. "Who?" He knew what I was doing. "Alpha Damien of Nightfang. At the west gate. Alone. He’s requesting entry. Says it’s about the Rouge King." The Rouge King. The name alone made my stomach twist. 3 months of burned villages. Missing scouts. Heads on pikes. "Alone?" I asked. "With 2 Nightfang guards. They stayed 100 yards back. He came to the gate by himself." Gods. That was either brave or stupid. Probably both. That was Damien. "Open the gate," I said. "4 guards. No weapons drawn unless he moves. Bring him to the main hall. Alone." Kade hesitated in the doorway. "Kiara—" "I’m not 18 anymore, Kade." My voice was steady. I’d practiced that tone for 5 years. "I’m Luna now." He nodded and left. I didn’t go down right away. I gave myself 10 minutes. To breathe. To shift my wolf back down. To remember who I was. Five years ago I stood in a mating circle in a white dress. 200 wolves watched as Damien, my fated mate, took my hand and said "I reject you, Luna Kiara." For a stronger alliance. For politics. For the Riverpack princess. I’d left that night with nothing but the clothes on my back. Now I had 400 wolves, 3 villages, and walls that hadn’t been breached in 2 years. The main hall was freezing. I’d ordered no fires. No warmth. No comfort. When the doors opened, the cold followed him in. Damien. He filled the doorway. He was broader than I remembered. His black tactical shirt strained across his shoulders. A fresh scar cut from his temple down to his jaw, disappearing into the collar. His hair was cropped short, military style. But his eyes... storm-gray. The same eyes that used to look at me like I was the only thing in the room. Now they looked tired. "Luna Kiara," he said. My name. The hall was silent except for the guards’ breathing. "Alpha Damien," I replied. My voice didn’t shake. "To what do I owe the honor of a Nightfang Alpha at my gate at midnight?" He didn’t waste time. That was new. Old Damien would’ve made small talk first. "The Rouge King will hit your eastern border in 6 days," he said. "He has 300 rogues. 2 witches. Nightfang can’t hold him alone. Neither can you." "So you came to ask for help." "I came to offer an alliance." He took a step forward. The guards tensed. "The treaty. Pack alliance. Joint forces. Like our fathers had." I laughed. It came out sharp. "The treaty you burned when you rejected me?" His jaw ticked. "That was—" "Politics. Yes. I remember." I walked to the window. My territory stretched out behind the glass. Pups sleeping. Elders. Mothers. "You needed the Riverpack princess. What was her name again?" "Maris." "How’s that working out for you?" Silence. "She died last winter," he said quietly. "Fever." Oh. I should’ve felt something. Smugness. Relief. Grief for her. Nothing. "I’m sorry," I said. Because I was Luna now. Because that’s what Lunas did. "Don’t be." He dragged a hand through his hair. "I’m not here for apologies, Kiara. I’m here because if we don’t work together, 400 of your people die. And 600 of mine." I turned back to him. "Terms." "Terms?" "We talk them at dawn. In the war room. You stay in the guest quarters. Under guard. No roaming." "Understood." I moved to leave. My legs felt like water. "Kiara." I stopped but didn’t turn. "You look good," he said. "Strong." "I had to be." I made it to my room before my hands started shaking. *[CLIFFHANGER]* At 3am, the wards hummed again. Not red. Black. Kade burst in holding a raven. A red ribbon tied to its leg. The note inside, in blood: _"I know you’re meeting. I’m coming for both Alphas. Choose who dies first."_ --- *CHAPTER 22: TERMS AND OLD WOUNDS Dawn came gray and bitter. Damien was already in the war room when I arrived. Maps covered the table. Pins. Red string. His sleeves were rolled up, showing forearms corded with muscle and scar tissue. He didn’t look up when I entered. "Coffee?" There was a mug on the table. Black. Steam rising. "You remember," I said, sitting across from him. "Black. No sugar. You said it made you feel like a real adult when we were 17." "We were kids." "We were supposed to be mates." The word hung between us. He finally met my eyes. "Kiara, about what happened—" "Don’t." I slammed a folder on the table. "Terms. Number 1: My wolves answer to me. Always. You don’t give them orders." "Agreed." "Number 2: You provide weapons, healers, and 50 of your best fighters." "Agreed." "Number 3: After the war, borders revert to what they were before your father died." He paused. "That gives you 20 miles of river territory." "Yes." "Agreed." That was it? No fight? No negotiation? "I’m not here to fight you, Kiara," he said, reading me. "I’m here to keep you alive." My wolf whined. _Liar. He wants you._ "Then let’s work," I said. For 2 hours we didn’t talk about the past. We talked troop movements. Supply lines. Witch counter-measures. It was easy. Muscle memory. Like we’d planned wars in our sleep as teenagers. Until his hand brushed mine reaching for the eastern map. Static. Heat. We both jerked back. "Do you hate me?" he asked suddenly. The question was so quiet I almost missed it. I should’ve said yes. I should’ve said "I don’t care." "I don’t have time to hate you," I said instead. "I have a pack to run." He nodded, but his eyes said he didn’t believe me. A sharp knock. Kade. "Luna. The scouts. They found something at the eastern tree line." Damien was already standing. "Show us." The ride was silent. Snow crunched under our horses. When we got there, I wished I hadn’t. 3 wolves. My wolves. Hung by their feet from a thick oak branch. Throats cut. And carved into the bark, 7 feet high, deep enough to bleed sap: _"Pick a side, Kiara. His... or Mine."_ *[CLIFFHANGER]* Damien touched the carving. His fingers came away red. "This isn’t Rouge King," he said. "The strokes are wrong. This is someone who knows you." And from the trees, we heard a wolf howl. Close. --- *CHAPTER 23: BLOOD ON THE SNOW* ∼ We didn’t speak on the way back. I could smell them from a mile away. Copper. Fear. Snow turning pink. The healers were already there when we arrived. Shaking their heads. "Been dead since last night," Old Mara said. "Tortured first." Rage flooded me. Hot and blinding. "Find me who did this! Now!" "They wanted us to find them," Damien said. His voice was calm. Too calm. "This is a message, Kiara." "I know what it is!" I spun on him. "This is your war dragging into my home!" "Our war now." He stepped in front of me, blocking the bodies. "Breathe." I did. It tasted like ash. That night we held a pyre. 400 wolves stood in the snow and watched the flames. I gave the speech. About loyalty. About strength. About not letting fear win. Damien stood beside me. Not touching. But close enough that I could feel his heat. After, in my office, I finally cracked. 5 years of being strong. Of being Luna. Of not crying over him. And I shattered. I didn’t hear him come in. I just felt arms around me. Solid. Warm. "Hey," he murmured into my hair. "I’ve got you." "I don’t need you," I whispered into his chest. "I know." His hand ran down my back, steady. "But I’m here anyway." We stayed like that until the candles burned out. Until the sun started to rise. I fell asleep on his shoulder. *[CLIFFHANGER]* I woke up in my bed. Alone. But his black shirt was folded on my chair. And my door was locked. From the inside. And I had no memory of how I got here. --- *CHAPTER 24: SCARS* Panic. That was the first thing. Cold, sharp panic. I sat up. My hair was braided. I never braided my own hair. His shirt was on the chair. Smelled like him. Leather and pine and Damien. And the door. Locked. I threw on pants and a shirt, heart hammering. "Hello?" No answer. A soft knock. "Kiara? Are you up?" His voice. Outside. I yanked the door open. He looked wrecked. Dark circles. Hair messy like he’d been running his hands through it. "We need to talk." "About last night?" "About the fact that I didn’t touch you." The words came out fast. "You were crying. You fell asleep. I carried you here. I stayed until you were asleep. That’s it. I swear on my Alpha." Relief hit me so hard my knees buckled. "Then why is the door locked?" "Because I’m an i***t," he admitted. "Because for 5 minutes I pretended we were okay. That nothing had happened. So I locked it so no one would walk in." We stared at each other. Then the window exploded. Glass sprayed across the room. A rogue came through, all teeth and knife, aiming for my throat. Time slowed. Damien moved. He shoved me behind him and took the blade in his side. "NO!" I shifted. Half-wolf. Claws out. I ripped the rogue apart in 10 seconds. Blood on the walls. When I turned, Damien was on the floor. Breathing hard. "Don’t you dare," I said, dropping to my knees, hands on his wound. "Don’t you dare die on me. Not again." His eyes fluttered. "Again?" "Shut up." I was crying now. "HEALERS! NOW!" They came running. Got him to the infirmary. I didn’t leave his side. Not when they cut his shirt. Not when they stitched him. 8 inches. Deep. Hours later, he woke. His hand found mine. Weak, but sure. "If I die," he whispered, voice rough, "promise me something, Kiara." "Don’t talk." "Promise me you won’t go to war alone." I opened my mouth. And his eyes closed again. The heart monitor beeped. Steady. But he was out. *[CLIFFHANGER]* Outside the infirmary door, Kade was waiting. His face was pale. "Luna. We have a problem. The Rouge King’s army was just spotted. 2 miles out." "And Damien?" "Unconscious. For at least 12 hours.
