Lyra
As the class settled down, I took a moment to observe the professor. He was in his late forties, with tousled gray hair that gave him a slightly disheveled look, as if he had just come from a long night of grading papers. His glasses perched on the edge of his nose, and he wore a well-worn tweed jacket that seemed to be a staple of his wardrobe. He had an air of authority mixed with an approachable demeanor, which made the students feel comfortable.
“Welcome to Introduction to Literature,” he began, his voice booming yet warm. “My name is Mr. Thompson and I hope you’re all ready for a semester filled with exploration and discovery. Literature is not just about reading; it’s about understanding the world through different perspectives.”
As he spoke, I found myself getting lost in his words. He was passionate, his eyes lighting up as he discussed the themes we would explore: identity, love, and the human experience. I could see some students taking notes diligently, while others seemed to be daydreaming, their minds elsewhere.
But my mind wasn’t on the lecture. It kept drifting back to the mysterious boy across the room. I couldn’t help but steal glances at him, wondering what he was thinking, if he felt the same connection I did. Each time our eyes met, a spark ignited, sending butterflies swirling in my stomach.
“Lyra?” The professor’s voice cut through my thoughts, and I jolted in my seat. “Can you tell us what you think the significance of the opening line of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is?”
I blinked, caught off guard. “Uh, sure! It’s about the importance of wealth and marriage in society, and how it shapes relationships,” I stammered, trying to sound confident.
“Excellent observation!” he replied, nodding approvingly. I felt a rush of pride, but my heart was still racing from the boy’s gaze.
As the lecture continued, I found myself torn between paying attention to the professor and stealing glances at him. It was going to be a long class, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something extraordinary was about to unfold.
