The contract sat on my table for 6 hours.
$500,000. NDA. Leave town by Friday.
My mom coughed in the next room. Wet. Tired.
Her medical bills were stacked in the drawer. $47,000 and growing.
Red stamps. "FINAL NOTICE". "COLLECTIONS". "URGENT". "PAST DUE".
One signature and it all disappears.
No more collection calls at 6am.
No more choosing between medicine and food.
No more watching her work double shifts with a fever just to keep the lights on.
No more saying "we'll pay it next month."
My phone lit up. Unknown number.
`You think money fixes this? You started a war. -B`
Ben.
I didn’t answer.
My thumb hovered over the text box. Typed "maybe". Deleted it. Locked the screen.
What would I even say?
At midnight Daniel called me 3 times. I only picked up on the third.
"Kudo, please don’t sign it. They’re panicking. That means we’re winning."
His voice was desperate. Tired. Like he hadn’t slept either.
"Or it means they’re about to crush us," I whispered.
"You’re not alone in this. We have lawyers. We have the internet. We have the truth."
"Don’t do this alone."
"I have to think." I hung up before he could argue.
Before I could cry. Before I could admit I was terrified.
By 8am, a black SUV was outside. Tinted windows. Engine running.
Driver holding a sign with my name in neat print.
Mr. Carter wanted to talk. In person. Final offer.
The elevator to the 60th floor of Carter Tower took forever.
Glass walls. The whole city under my feet. Tiny cars. Tiny people.
My stomach dropped with every floor. 40. 50. 60.
Ding.
When the doors opened, Mr. Carter was waiting.
$10,000 suit. Cold smile. And Ben.
Ben stood by the window with his back to me.
Hoodie under his blazer. Hands in pockets. Shoulders tense.
He didn’t turn around.
"Sit, Miss Kudo," Mr. Carter said. Gesture to a leather chair.
I sat. The chair was leather. Cold. It swallowed me.
"Have you made a decision?" He pushed the contract forward with a gold pen.
The paper made a sound on the desk. Final.
I didn’t touch it. "I read it."
"And?"
"And no."
His smile vanished.
"Pity. I was hoping we could handle this like adults."
"Threatening my mother isn’t adult," I said.
My hands were shaking under the table. I hid them in my lap.
"Threat? That was a courtesy." He opened a second folder.
Photos spilled out. Mom at the hospital in her scrubs.
Daniel at his job at the cafe wiping tables.
Me walking to school this morning. Timestamped 7:03am.
"We protect what’s ours. Or we remove problems."
Ben finally turned. "Dad, enough."
His voice cracked. He looked wrecked. Eyes red.
"Stay out of it, son." Mr. Carter didn’t look at him.
I looked between them. Fear. Anger. And something else. Power.
All of it mine to take or walk away from.
"You want me gone," I said slowly. Voice steady. "Fine."
Mr. Carter relaxed. Leaned back. "Smart girl."
"But not for half a million." I stood up. Chair scraped against marble.
"I want everything Carter Group has."
The room went silent.
Even the AC stopped.
Ben’s head snapped up. His eyes were wide. Shock.
Mr. Carter’s face went blank. Then red.
"You ungrateful little—"
I walked to the door. "You wanted to play dirty? Then let’s play."
I turned back. Hand on the handle. "See you in court."
Step 10: No deals. No mercy. Just war.
`Chapter 11.
They offered me money.
I asked for the company.
Let’s see who blinks first.
