Chapter 16: THE FALLOUT

601 Words
The internet did not sleep. By 3am, #ArrestCarter was still number one. My livestream had 8 million views. News channels were playing clips of me on the roof. On loop. In slow motion. With dramatic music and captions. "Poor girl exposes billionaire" "Student risks life to speak truth" "Will Carter Group survive this?" My phone was dead. I charged it in the hospital waiting room while Mom slept. She was hooked up to monitors. Breathing. Finally safe. The bills were gone. But the fear wasn’t. It sat in my chest like a stone. Ben hadn't left. He was asleep in the chair across from me, suit jacket over his face. For the first time, he looked 17. Not the school king. Not the CEO’s son. Just tired. Dark circles. Mouth open. Human. Vulnerable. My phone buzzed. 400 new messages. Daniel: `Bro. You're everywhere. Are you okay?? Call me.` Unknown: `You're so brave` Unknown: `Carter deserves jail` Unknown: `Watch your back` Unknown: `My dad lost his job because of you` Unknown: `Thank you for speaking up` That last one made my stomach drop. Collateral damage. People losing jobs because of me. A nurse came in. Soft voice. "Miss Kudo? The police are here to take your statement." In the next room were 2 detectives and a lawyer from Carter Group. $2000 suit. Gold watch. Smiling like a shark. "Miss," the lawyer said, sliding papers across the table. Gold pen on top. "Mr. Carter would like to settle. 2 million dollars. Wire transfer by morning. In exchange for you deleting the livestream and signing this NDA." 2 million. That would pay for Mom's treatment for life. A new house. College. Everything. No more GoFundMe. No more "charity case". Just sign and disappear. Forget it ever happened. I stared at the paper. 24 pages. Legal jargon. My name in bold on page 1. "And if I don't sign?" I asked. Voice small. Hands under the table. The detective answered. Older guy. Tired eyes. Coffee breath. "Then we investigate. It’ll take months. Years. Trials. Appeals. Depositions. But Miss, people like Mr. Carter... they don't go down easy. They have lawyers. They have time. They have money. They have people." Ben woke up. "Don't sign it," he said immediately. Voice sharp. Awake now. He stood up, blocking me. Looked at the lawyer. "Get out. Now." The lawyer smiled. Didn’t stand. "Think about it. 24 hours." He left the papers. "Clock’s ticking, Miss Kudo. Offers like this don’t come twice." Door closed behind him. Ben turned to me. "Kudo. We can do this. The evidence is public now. He can't touch you." "Can't he?" I held up my phone. New email. No sender. No subject line preview. Subject: `We know where your mother is.` My hands were shaking. I opened it. No text. Just a photo of her hospital room door. Room 302. Taken 10 minutes ago. Timestamp in the corner. 3:12am. My blood went cold. "They found her," I whispered. "They’re watching her. Right now." Ben grabbed my phone. His face went white. "Okay. New plan. We go public again. Right now." "Livestream. Show them the email. Show them the photo. Show them everything. If we hide, we lose. If we fight in the light, they can’t touch us." Down the hall, Mom coughed in her sleep. The monitor beeped. Step 14: The fallout. They offered me money. They threatened my mom. Now I have to choose. Take the 2 million and run. Or burn it all down on camera. `Chapter 16. 2 million dollars. Or my mother’s safety. They think I’ll break. They’re wrong. -K`
