Chapter One

     "Beep, beep," the alarm sings to wake me up, I smack it and I sense James shaking me.

    "The FBI is here," me being a criminal, I freak out for a second and then I remember that I'm part of the FBI. I quickly change my attire to a black top with a black skirt and black dress shoes. After changing my attire, I brush my hair and pin it up. I run to the porch and catch sight of the head of the FBI who, leads me to his car. I smile and got into the car murmuring, Lily, you're part of the FBI now, not a criminal any longer. I continue to murmur that so I don't end up doing something unintelligent and showing that I'm a person who brakes the law. Glad that I've never seen the inside of a jail cell, I should have a much better chance of not seeing the inside of a cell. Then again, the FBI is a highly trained police force of New York. I look out of window watching buildings go by. Then, the head of the FBI, who is five feet and five inches tall, muscular and has dark brown hair that's neat with dark green eyes stops his vehicle and opens the door to let me out.

    "Agent Lily, I'd like you to meet Agent Lana," I look to where the man is pointing and I see a woman who looks exactly like me.

    She winks at me, I wink back then when we go to shake hands Lana says, "Good luck, Lily."

    "Good luck, Lana." We both smile because the head of the FBI probably thought that we are telling each other good luck at our new job but we weren't. Then, we walk into the FBI office and I gasp seeing that no one made the movements to get up to arrest me or Lana but they do accept us. The head of the FBI tells me and my sister that his name is Luke, he shows us our desks and tells us the rules in the FBI office.

    "Questions," Luke asks.

    "No," my twin and I say at the same time.

    Luke says as he looks at us, "well, I have an interrogation. Are you twins?" We nod and Luke smiles, "I have twins to bad they are in their 20s and have a family of their own." I glance at my sister and send her my I-think-I-figured-out-something look. Suddenly, I feel my phone vibrate.

    I look at Luke and he nods so I go outside and answer the phone, "yes, Jason?" On the other side of the phone I hear my brother-in-law say in a shaking voice, "Linis is in trouble, Lily."

    Quickly, I run back into the FBI yelling, "my son is in trouble! I need back up," with no question, forty or fifty FBI agents head to my house, after a while I hear them in the living room. When I walk into the room, I see Linus in a chair sleeping but, when I speak he doesn't move or make a noise which is strange because even if he is in a deep sleep he awakes up every time I say something. James tries, nothing so, Lana tries and again nothing. I place a hand on Linus' forehead and find it stone cold, an agent points out a bruise on the back of his head. There is a thump making everyone turn towards it, then we see a man who has red hair with dull black eyes that reminds one of midnight and he is carrying a knife.

    The man says, "Oh hello, Lily, Linus and I are just-"

    "Shut up," I scream, cutting him off, "hands off of Linus, now!" My old colleague chuckles and takes out a gun then puts it to my son's head. I pull out my own gun and wait.

    Suddenly, I hear, "This is the FBI! Lower your weapon!"

    The man lowers his weapon and again he chuckles, "Oh! You've invited your friends to the play date too."

    "Cut the stupid tricks!" The man sighs and says that we are not fun and asks why we all have guns. Then I ask how he has the nerves to mess with my son and the FBI and expect to live because in the past he had killed many people but never put in jail.

    I pull out a notebook that reads, 2010 - I am in his group as the leader. 2014 - Linnis and Laura are born, I quit to raise my family and start a clean life.

    I close the notebook and look at the man. The man is Felix who is my ex-husband and the next leader of our group. He slips me a note that reads,

2012

    The raid that we go on, leaves the group members mostly injured and dead. A few days later, you leave us, marry that i***t James and have Linnis and Laura.

Now

    So I'm here to kill your precious son so you can feel what I have been feeling when you left me. Then I write back, I left you because I thought you were dead!

    I poke Felix hard in the back with my gun and my dog, Phoenix bites Felix's hand and doesn't let go. The man grits his teeth and chuckles when the hand cuffs click. I slap his face as they put him inside of the police car. A ambulance siren goes off in the distance and quickly arrives then, the doctors and nurses put my son inside, I stand there hoping that Linnis will be okay. Luke tells me to go to the hospital with them and that James will cover my duty, I thank him and follow the ambulance. I see Linnis and think of Laura so I yell to James,  "Where's Laura?" James nods to the sleeping child in his arms. When the medical vehicle arrives at the hospital, I go inside and see a older man with dark brown hair and blue eyes, "Dad! You never told me that you were here!"

    The man coughs, "Lily, I must tell you something," my adoptive dad grabs my hand, his hand is shaking, "I'm not going to be here for much longer, Felix shot me." He kisses my head, "Tell Lana that I love her."

    "You can't die," I yell in anger, he is my only parent left. Back at my house, I see Felix, then without thinking, I pull out my gun and put it to his head.

    Luke nods and I pull the trigger, Luke says, "Another one gone, well done Agent Lily," I sigh, "I'm sorry."

    "You don't have a reason to be sorry, Luke. I've wanted to kill Felix for years now." I look at Felix and put him into the black case.

    Then I see Felix's father, Leonard, who is a member of the FBI, "Good job, Lily, for killing my son."

    I shrug and say, "It wasn't that hard, Agent Leonard."

    Then the man coughs, "We've been trying for years."

    "I know him. He was asking for it and I took the advantage while I could." I take a deep breath and head back to the hospital. When I got there, I see nurses running to a room that is full of nurses and doctors so, I look at the number on the door that read, 406. I sit on the bench to wait. Hours pass and I still wait, never sleeping, always watching and waiting for my son. After about twelve hours of waiting, I see a doctor who is wearing light blue scrubs, with sky blue eyes and blond hair.

    He walks over to me and says, "Mrs. Lanes, I'm very afraid that you can't see Linis."

    It takes two seconds for me to realize what the doctor had said and when I realize his words, I yell, "I'm a FBI agent and the boy's mother!"

    The doctor shakes his head, "I'm sorry, Lily, but you can't see your son, Doctor's orders."

    "I don't care what the doctor says! I've got to see Linis! He has never been away from any of his family!"

    I see the look on the man's face which is a mix of sadness and happiness, "Well, there is always a first time for everything, am I right, Agent Lily Lintis Lanes?" I look at the doctor in shock and I remember this man from twelve years ago. Rubbing the scar on my arm that goes from the top of my shoulder to the tip of my finger, I see that horrid day once more.

2008

    I am a eighteen year old girl whose nickname is The Girl From Heaven and a man who's name is Peter Narlin finds me in a coffee shop, crying. He sits down across from me and asks what is wrong, when I answer that the hotel that I am staying in is on fire and that almost all of my belongings are burning up in the flames. Peter looks into my eyes and says that a pretty girl like you shouldn't be staying in a crappy hotel that is very "flammable". When he says, "flammable" I stare at him and then everything goes by to fast, all I remember is the sent of smoke, hearing sirens. My clothes are in rags and my long hair has been cut to my cheek bone. Though the rags, I can see my ribs sticking out, my skin is a pasty white. The room that I am in is dark, damp and musty, then there is Peter who is well fed, well dressed and healthy. The man takes out a pole, trips me with it, then picks me up and puts me on a hard slab of iron. I gasp as the ice cold metal seeps into my skin and Peter puts chains on my feet then tells me to lift my arms, when I do he chains them above my head and he knocks me unconscious. I wake up in a hospital, safe but my right arm hurting so bad and when I look at it, I notice a long gash going from the top of my shoulder to my finger tips that is bleeding.

Now

    I blink and still see Peter standing there but, this time wearing the light blue scrubs. In five seconds, I have the man at gun point and both of us screaming. I am screaming because Peter has the same knife that made my scar years ago, Peter is screaming because I have the same gun that made everyone scared that they've have their brains blown out of their heads. Another five seconds pass and I'm in the same room as Linnis, the other doctors and nurses relax and I ask, "What has Peter done to Linnis?"

    Someone says, "Nothing yet, Mrs. Lanes," I almost faint, but I hold myself study, "we tried to stop him but we couldn't."

    I nod, "I'm here to protect you all." They all get back to work. "Hello, Peter."

    The doctor says, "Hello, Lanes," when he pulls me closer, I smell peppermint on his breath then he kisses me. I take my gun and put it to his head. I have the sense that everyone is watching to see what happens. I feel Peter fingering my scar, which I tense up .

    I pull away and drive home to see James, and he says, "We are going out tonight Lily." He smiles and I hug him, not thinking of Peter or anyone else and I know that he is doing this to keep me from thinking about Linnis. We both got into the car and drove to our favorite restaurant. This is the place where James proposed to me years ago and when we arrive I go to sit down at the same spot. We laugh because we noticed that it is starting to rain as we go inside but, both of us just stand there laughing in the rain and the cook sees us.

    He says, "Hello, Lily and James!"

    "Hello, Joe, we'd like the same as last time," the man nods and we sit down, James sees a basket of cherries and pops one in my mouth.

    I grin and James puts a hand on my cheek, "I love you, Lily."

    We ate and left, it is late when we get back so we go to bed. When I wake up, James is already gone and I guess that he is at work. I get up, get dressed and take the other car to work, but when I get there, I don't see James. I run inside and ask Luke, "Have you seen James this morning?"

    "No, I haven't Lily, is something wrong," the man looks troubled.

    "Yes, when I woke up this morning he wasn't there and I looked everywhere!"

    Luke looks at me, "I'll send someone to go look for him," I nod and go up front. I see Peter, I pull out my gun. I little while later, I see Luke walking towards us.

    Peter kisses me again after saying, "Think of your next action carefully, Lily." This I consider for a few moments, then he pulls away, "I love you, Lily." That makes my hand fall to my side and I drop my gun.

    I hear Luke say, "Lily! Lily." I look up to see the man, he places a hand on my shoulder, "James has been assassinated." I sway and fall onto the floor. The next thing I know is that I am at home and looking into Peter's eyes. Since I'm still in shock, I don't move or say anything, I just stand there with my eyes stuck looking at one thing.

     Peter puts a hand on my scarred shoulder, I scream and slap him in the face. When my hand contacts his face, he clenches my arm. I clench my teeth and yell, "you killed James! I know you did!"

    Peter looks at me with sad eyes, "what makes you say that, Lily?"

    "You said, 'I love you, Lily!' and James said that before he was killed!"

    I begin to cry so, Peter hugs me, strokes my back and says, "There, there. He died a hero," then I think that Peter didn't kill my husband, "Lily?" I look up, "I wasn't the one who gave you that scar or killed James."

     "Who was it then?"

    "My brother, perhaps you don't remember what he looks like." I close my eyes and try to remember that day again, but I fail.
