Chapter 1 — Ashes Never Sleep Untitled Episode

754 Words
Rain fell like mourning over Blackwood Manor. Every flash of lightning carved the sprawling estate into stark relief against the midnight sky, illuminating its stone towers and towering iron gates before plunging them back into darkness. Inside, the mansion—once filled with laughter, music, and warm candlelight—had become unnervingly silent. Ten-year-old Adrian Blackwood stood at the top of the grand staircase, clutching a carved wooden chess knight his father had given him earlier that evening. "Always think three moves ahead," Lucien had said with a smile. "That's how kings survive." Adrian had laughed then. Now, the smile felt like a memory from another lifetime. A sharp smell reached him. Smoke. At first it was faint, like a forgotten candle. Then came another scent—gasoline. His heartbeat quickened. Somewhere downstairs, glass shattered. Footsteps echoed through the marble halls. Not the hurried footsteps of servants. Measured, Deliberate. Someone had entered the house. "Mother?" Adrian called softly. No answer. He descended a few steps. The chandelier above swayed violently. Another crash. This time accompanied by a scream. His mother's voice. "Adrian!" He ran. The corridor leading to the library was already filling with smoke. Flames licked the velvet curtains, spreading with impossible speed. He reached the library door. Locked. "Mother!" He pounded against it until his fists ached. From the other side came muffled voices. A man laughed. Another voice said, "Make sure no one survives." The words froze Adrian in place. This wasn't an accident. The fire had been planned. He searched desperately for another entrance when strong arms wrapped around him from behind. "Young master!" It was Elias, the elderly groundskeeper. "We have to go!" "My parents are inside!" Elias hesitated only for a heartbeat before pulling Adrian toward the rear exit. "The house is gone." "No!" Adrian struggled with all the strength a frightened child could muster. He never reached the library again. Outside, rain hissed against walls of flame. Blackwood Manor burned like a funeral pyre. Adrian collapsed onto the soaked grass, staring as the roof caved inward. A silhouette appeared in an upstairs window. His father. Lucien Blackwood. For one impossible moment, their eyes met through fire and rain. Lucien raised one hand—not in panic, but in a gesture Adrian couldn't understand. Then the ceiling crashed down. The figure vanished. The explosion shook the earth. The manor was consumed. Police ruled it an accidental gas explosion. The newspapers called it a tragedy. The city mourned. Only Adrian knew the truth. Someone had murdered his family. And someone powerful had made sure the world believed otherwise. Twenty-one years later. The skyline of Ravenport shimmered beneath the evening sun. Glass towers pierced the clouds. Luxury yachts lined the harbor. Money ruled here. So did secrets. A black sedan rolled silently through the financial district before stopping in front of the newly completed Ashcroft International Tower. The driver opened the rear door. A man stepped onto the pavement. Tailored charcoal suit. Black leather gloves. Cold gray eyes that missed nothing. Adrian Blackwood had returned. The city no longer knew him by that name. Officially, Adrian Blackwood had died in the fire twenty-one years ago. Now he was known as Adrian Vale—a venture capitalist whose rapid success had made headlines across Europe. Only one person knew the truth. Damien Cross. Friend. Brother in all but blood. The only witness to Adrian's years of preparation. Damien approached with an easy smile. "You've waited twenty-one years for this." Adrian looked up at the Ashcroft logo gleaming high above the entrance. "I haven't waited." He adjusted his cufflinks. "I've prepared." Damien handed him a slim black folder. "Everything you asked for. Board members, financial records, family schedules, private security." Adrian opened it. The first photograph showed Victor Ashcroft. The second showed a young woman with dark hair and unwavering blue eyes. Seraphina Ashcroft. Victor's daughter. Adrian paused for a fraction of a second. There was something familiar about her expression. Not fear. Not arrogance. Sadness. He closed the folder. "It changes nothing." Damien nodded. "Of course." Across the street, hidden behind mirrored glass, someone lifted a camera. The shutter clicked. Another click. Then a message was sent from an encrypted phone. "Subject has arrived. Phase One begins tonight." The sender deleted the message before disappearing into the crowd. Far above the city, a lone figure watched from the penthouse of Ashcroft Tower. The person smiled. "Welcome home, Adrian." The voice was barely more than a whisper. "You've come exactly as planned."
