Chapter one

Not everyone understands the feeling of first love. Sometimes they are the ones we grow old with. Or sometimes they are just good friends. Or just sometimes we've decided to never see each other again, even though the feelings are still there. Your first love is like when you had your first taste of something so good that nothing can compare to that. I loved Casey dearly, he was the guy who was shy at first but when you got to know him. He was the guy that you would want to marry and keep by your side for the rest of your life. Sometimes I wish we could start over and sometimes I wish I never left the farm. It was a constant battle between my brain and my heart. What the heart wanted, the brain rejected. "Abby?" My grandma asked concerned. I looked up from my breakfast and noticed, everyone around the table was looking at me. My dad was leaning back in his chair watching me with curiosity. "Are you sick?" My dad asked. "No, why?" I asked. "You haven't touched your food." My dad smiling. "I'm fine," I reassured them. "Then what is it?" Is this the first time that I've noticed that my family is really nosy? "Nothing." I pressed, wishing that they would just stop. "Did something happened last night?" My grandma suddenly asked. I looked at her with a questioning look. "You came in very late." "You never miss anything, do you?" I asked massaging my temples. "Where were you?" My dad asked suddenly very interested in my well being. "In town." Hanging out with my gorgeous ex-boyfriend. But none of them had to know that. " My father stared at me for a while. Before he looked completely suspicious. "I'm just going to clean up," I muttered, excusing myself from the table. "What about your breakfast?" My dad asked, gesturing to my untouched plate. "I'm not hungry." I almost ran towards the staircase, just so I can get away from them. I stripped out of my clothes and turned on the shower. What was Casey doing here? I haven't seen him in a year. He was breaking my heart all over again. I switched off the tab, grabbed a towel, dried off and got dressed. I slipped on my cowgirl hat and took the stairs down to the front door. I left the house and made my way towards Speedy. "Hey boy." I greeted rubbing his ears. "You are the only male, I get to understand," I told him, thinking that I was alone. "So, it is about a boy then?" My dad asked, surprising me. "What are you doing?" I asked, whirling around, standing with my hand over my heart. "What does it look like I'm doing?" My father asked, holding up a ball of hay. I just shrugged, moving away from Speedy, so that my father can throw the hay into his stable. "So, who's the boy?" My father asked, dusting off his hands. "Who said it was a boy?" I asked, rubbing Speedy's head. "Are you into girls now?" "Dad." I protested. "What?" He pulled up his shoulders. "It's Casey," I told him, grabbing Speedy's saddle and mounting it on top of Speedy. I tightened the saddle, trying to ignore my father's stare. "Did he contact you?" "Do you know Casey as the contacting type?" I asked, turning around. "His here." My father said. I nodded, turned back around, slipped my foot into the stirrup threw my leg over Speedy and sat down on the saddle. My father handed the reins to me. "What happened?" I noticed the hope in my father's eyes. "We are not back together," I told him. "I know. But there is a chance. The boy loves you." "Dad, it's like water under the bridge. The same water doesn't flow over again. Once it's gone, it's gone." "You can't compare your love to water. You left the boy with a note, left him confused. And don't lie to me. Or deny it to yourself. But you still love him." "We are too different." I kicked Speedy on the side, gesturing for him to go. I made my way back to town, to get the things that I've forgotten and to get some tools to fix the fence. "Back so soon." Uncle Ian asked as I entered his shop. "Just looking for some stuff." I replied walking through his shop. "Haven't seen your dad in a while." He replied. "He has been keeping an eye on the coyote's." I replied. I found what I was looking for, I paid for it and made my way over to Speedy. "Come on, let's go home." On our way back, I couldn't stop thinking about Casey. About his eyes, his smile and his smooth velvet voice. He has grown up into a good looking man. He was rugged and not that beautiful kind. The hot kind. He was definitely a man, s*x-on-drugs-kind-of-man. When we arrived back on the farm I noticed a car was parked in front of the house. I motioned for Speedy to slow down. But it was too late as the person and my dad exit the house. I frowned at the person. "Hey, Abby." He greeted in his texas drawl. "What are you doing here?" I asked unmounting myself from Speedy. "Just had a talk with your father." He said slipping on his hat. I looked at my dad but he looked anywhere but me. "Are you seriously considering selling the farm? Our home?" I asked. "Abby." My father started looking at me. "This is where I grow up. Doesn't that mean anything to you?" I growled. "Now listen, sweet pea." The intruder started. I whirled around to look at him. "What did you just call me?" I asked. He gave me a smile. "Your daddy and I are businessmen. This is a business deal." He started but didn't continue as my fist connected with his nose. "It might be a business deal between you. But I am not giving this farm over to you. Not now and not ever. Get that into your head." I warned. My father helped up the man, apologized for my bad manners and helped him to his car. "Just watch little sweet pea, this farm will be mine." I just shook my head. Over my dead body. My father walked up to me, after letting out the intruder. "What was that?" He asked, coming to stand next to me. "That's me, showing you that I will not give up on this farm. No matter if you already did." "Abby." My father started but it was cut off short when a truck made its way towards us. "I didn't invite anyone else to look at the farm." "It's Casey," I told my father, as I watched him climb out of the truck. My dad left my side to overwhelm Casey with a hug. Unbelievable. Casey looked up from my dad and his green eyes landed on me. It was like our first day when I bumped into him. Those green eyes piercing through my soul, giving me a glimpse of life. The shy boy who fell in love with a cowgirl. Here he was standing, looking at me making a promise with his eyes, that he wasn't done with me yet. I thought I could run. But I was wrong. I can't outrun my love for Casey.
