ISABELLA —
"Thank you so much for coming back to Sofia despite what I did." I said with Sofia on Enzo's chest fast asleep as we slowly walked back to the company.
"You don't have to thank me, you know I would always come back for Sofia, that's how much I care for her." Enzo said to me as we continued our walk into the building with his guards behind us and a few employees whispering.
As we entered the busy building, I couldn't help but notice the whispers and glances from the employees. It made me feel uneasy, as if they were judging me for something. But I shook off those thoughts and focused on Enzo's words.
"Enzo, why did you come back?" I asked, unable to stop the curiosity from seeping into my voice. "I mean, I appreciate it, but what made you change your mind?"
Enzo sighed, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions. "Isabella, I came back for Sofia. She's my daughter, and no matter what, I will always be there for her."
I nodded, understanding his words. Sofia was the reason for his return, and I couldn't deny that it brought a sense of relief and comfort to know that he valued his relationship with her.
"But what about us?" I couldn't help but ask, my voice laced with a hint of vulnerability. "Will things change between us now? I mean, you're here, in the office, with Sofia, and I..."
Enzo cut me off, placing a finger on my lips gently. "Isabella, I can't promise you what the future holds. I can't say that everything will be the same between us. But what I can promise you is that I will always be there for Sofia, and by extension, for you. Our relationship may be complicated, but I care about both of you."
His words struck a chord within me. I wanted to believe him, to trust that things could work out somehow. But a part of me remained hesitant, guarding myself from potential heartache.
Enzo led me to his office, where he placed the sleeping Sofia on a couch, covering her with a soft blanket. As I watched him tenderly take care of her, a myriad of emotions washed over me. I couldn't deny the kindness and love he displayed towards our daughter, but I still harbored doubts about our own relationship.
"Enzo, I need to know..." I began, my voice wavering. "Do you still want Sofia in your life?"
Enzo turned to face me, his eyes searching mine for a moment. "Isabella, love is a complicated thing. But yes, I do still care about Sofia. I don't know what the future holds for us, but I want you to know that Sofia are important to me."
His words tugged at my heart, causing the protective walls around it to crack. I wanted to believe in the possibility of reconciliation, of finding a way to navigate this complex situation together.
"But what about your job, your responsibilities?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Can you really balance everything? I don't want to be a burden to you."
Enzo stepped closer to me, his hand reaching out to brush against mine. "Isabella, I won't lie and say it will be easy. Balancing my job and my responsibilities as a father figure for Sofia will be a challenge. But I'm willing to try, because you and Sofia mean everything to me. We'll figure it out together."
"We can't continue lying like this, you do know that." I said to him making him chuckle.
"And who said we were lying?"Enzo eyes his gaze not leaving Sofia as he sits beside her caressing her hair.
"You know, I have never shed a teardrop for anyone ever since my parent death but with Sofia I felt too attached." He said still smiling at Sofia's figure. I never expected things to turn out this way, I never expected Sofia to find someone who would care for her and take good care of her like his own, but Enzo was ready to do that despite knowing nothing about me. I don't know how else to pay him back for all his kindness and mostly for his affection towards Sofia.
"Who is Sofia's father?" Enzo questioned making me a bit dumbstruck, I had no answer to that. I can't even remember the night it all happened, won't I sound more like a fool if I tell him I don't know anything about Sofia's father.
Just when I was about to reply him his assistant walked in with a phone in her hands.
"Mr Enzo, your fiancee." She announced making me stare at Enzo in surprise he also looked speechless like he was trying to hide it.
"Not my fiancee yet." Enzo said to me like he could sense I had a lot of questions for him.
"Excuse me, one minute please." Enzo added taking the phone from his assistant and then walking out, his assistant stared at Sofia on the sofa for a while before leaving, I know she would spread rumors now. This wasn't what I expected, how would I protect Sofia if Enzo is getting married. Sofia would never believe a word I say to her if she finds out that Enzo is getting married to someone else, Sofia might be a little child but she is smarter than expected and easily figure out what's wrong and that he isn't her father or resent him thinking he never loved her, but at the same time I was curious at who Enzo was easily attracted to and whiling to marry him, I thought he was known for being ruthless and not attracted to any woman mostly for his mysterious business but now he suddenly has a fiancee, few days ago he was perfectly single. Why am I even bothered about his marital affairs we only know each other because of Sofia and it should stay that way.
Authors POV—
Enzo entered his office to find Sofia still fast asleep on the couch. He couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness that Isabella had already left. He wanted to talk to her, to sort through the complicated emotions that were swirling within him. But he knew that he had his duties to attend to.
Miguel looked up from his work as Enzo walked in. "Enzo, where were you? I was waiting for you."
Enzo let out a tired sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Something came up, Miguel. I had to leave. Isabella and Sofia were here but they've left now."
Miguel raised an eyebrow, a hint of concern in his eyes. "Is everything alright, Enzo? You seem... off."
Enzo shook his head, trying to push aside the inner turmoil. "I just need to focus on work for now. Let's get through these meetings."
As the day wore on, Enzo found it increasingly difficult to concentrate. He couldn't shake off the image of Sofia's tear-streaked face from earlier. He couldn't escape the guilt and regret that weighed heavily on his heart.
But in the midst of it all, there was a burning determination to be a better father for Sofia. He wanted to create a future for her that was filled with love, support, and happiness. And he knew that he had to find a way to balance his responsibilities to the mafia with his responsibilities to his daughter.
As the day finally came to a close, Enzo couldn't help but feel physically and emotionally drained. He made his way back to his office, hoping to find some solace in the silence.
But to his surprise, Isabella was waiting for him. She looked at him with a mix of worry and determination. "Enzo, we need to talk."
Enzo's heart skipped a beat, his conflicted emotions coming to the forefront once again. "Isabella, I... I don't even know where to start."
Isabella took a deep breath, taking a step closer to him. "I understand that this is all complicated, Enzo. But we need to figure things out. We can't keep going on like this, with secrets and uncertainty."
Enzo nodded, his eyes filled with sincerity. "I know. I don't want to keep things complicated, Isabella. But please understand that Sofia is my priority. I want to be there for her, to be the father she deserves."
Isabella looked at him with a mix of sadness and understanding. "I want that too, Enzo. Sofia means everything to me. But we can't ignore the fact that there are so many obstacles in our path. Can we find a way to navigate them together?"
Enzo reached out to hold Isabella's hands, his touch filled with warmth and reassurance. "I don't have all the answers, Isabella. But I'm willing to try. I'm willing to fight for Sofia, for us."
Isabella let out a small smile, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I want to believe you, Enzo. I want to believe that there's a chance for us. But we need to be honest with each other, no matter how difficult it may be."
Enzo nodded, his grip on her hands tightening slightly. "I promise you, Isabella. I will be honest with you. And I hope that you can be honest with me too."
Isabella leaned in closer, her forehead resting against his. "I want to trust you, Enzo. I want to believe that we can find a way to make this work. But we can't do it alone. We need each other."
Enzo closed his eyes, feeling a mix of relief and determination wash over him. "We'll figure it out, Isabella. Together."
Isabella wasn't sure why she was making Enzo keep such promises but she was ready to reach any extent for her daughter but she was not sure what Enzo had planned for the both of them.
"Daddy…" Sofia called to Enzo distracting them from their little discussion as she slowly walked up to Enzo who slowly picked her up from the ground placing a kiss on her cheek.
"That was a very long nap." He exaggerated chuckling.
"Daddy, I want you to take me to your house." Sofia said to Enzo with half sleepy eyes making Isabella more frustrated on how Sofia was so good at getting them from one problem to another.
Isabella's frustration grew as Sofia insisted on going to Enzo's house. She knew that it would only complicate things further and potentially confuse Sofia even more. But Enzo seemed willing to go along with Sofia's request, much to Isabella's surprise.
"Enzo, I really don't think it's a good idea for Sofia to come to your house," Isabella pleaded, her voice filled with concern. "It's already complicated enough as it is. Taking her there will only make things more confusing for her."
Enzo looked at Isabella, his eyes softening. "Isabella, I understand your concerns. But Sofia is like my daughter, and she wants to spend more time with me. I can't deny her that, especially after being absent for so long."
Isabella sighed, reluctantly acknowledging his point. "I know, Enzo. But please understand that this is all new to Sofia. She's just starting to understand the concept of having a father figure in her life. I don't want to overwhelm her."
Enzo nodded, his grip on Sofia tightening slightly. "I hear you, Isabella. But I think it's important for Sofia to have some sense of normalcy. My house is a safe place for her, and it's where she can be surrounded by people who care about her."
Isabella bit her lip, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts. Part of her wanted to protect Sofia from any potential heartache, but another part of her recognized the importance of Sofia building a relationship with her father.
"Okay, Enzo," Isabella finally relented, her voice filled with resignation. "But please promise me that you'll take things slow with Sofia. She's still adjusting to everything, and I don't want her to feel overwhelmed."
Enzo nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude. "I promise, Isabella. Sofia's well-being is my top priority. I'll make sure she feels comfortable and safe."
With a heavy heart, Isabella accompanied Enzo and Sofia to his house. As they entered the grand mansion, Isabella couldn't help but be in awe of its beauty and grandeur. It was clear that Enzo lived a different life, far removed from the one she was accustomed to.
