CHAPTER 4

Zayne's pov “I did it,” that was the first thing I said to the park doctor as soon as he walked into my home office. His eyes had been through my extensive bookshelves, containing knowledge used by Alphas even generations before me. They snapped at me immediately after I made that statement. He walked over to me carefully like he was maneuvering through a minefield. Then, in a voice that was a decibel above a whisper. He asked me. “Did what?” The edge that was already all over his face told me that he had a clue, but maybe for now, he just wanted to live in the safe canopy of denial. I stretched my leg forward, hoping that I would do something to the pins and needles all over my body. It helped debate, but not enough to feel satisfactory. “I did exactly what I said I was going to do, now…” He dragged a seat and sat down close to me, while removing eye contact only when it was necessary, and keeping it on me after he had secured a piece of furniture to sit on. “Please tell me you didn't do that…” I chuckled despite myself, “I did. Everyone has been bugging me to choose a new Luna so I…” “I know the answer you're going to give other people, but what's the truth, Zayne?” He said and grinned. The smile on my face almost immediately disappeared, and I placed one arm over my desk. The other one had its fingers pressed up to my temple, massaging it to ease a bit of the headache that was coming on. Cole was my personal pack doctor, but before that, we had known each other from pups, and I could even have said we were something close to friends, even though I wasn't that attached to him. After the incident. I chose to stay out of the public eye and slowly rot away in my mansion. He always insisted on checking up on me when everyone else was just biding their time before I croaked. “I can't let this go…I still see her in my dreams, all these years have passed, and I can still see her in my dreams, blaming me for everything." He placed an understanding palm over my shoulder. “Zayne, you know…” “Yes, I know it's not my fault; it's the stupid survivor's guilt. I get it. I know that blaming myself is so ridiculous..” I stood up on my feet, spreading my hands in a confused gesture. “But if one of us had to survive, why couldn't it have been her?” I crouched on the floor, fighting back the tears that wanted to betray my walls of masculinity and force me into the fetal position just like it did during those first months. “Cole, she was already 5 months along…both of them, I lost both of them with the blink of an eye,” Cole's eyes rested on me pitifully, and the pity only got deeper as I finally rose and he guided me back to my seat. “This is the only thing I can do for her, I need to bring that man to justice, that bastard that took away everything from me…I will make sure he pays with his life.” “Zayne …” Cole began carefully because he knew that he was breaching a sensitive topic. “It's already been 5 years; you have hired countless private investigators and even done the work yourself, but still, even with the police involved, and everything, you weren't able to catch him…” I gritted my teeth and then slammed my clenched fist on the table. “Then what I'm I supposed to do? Give up?” The only thing that had pushed me to get up for the past five years was my revenge. It was the sole reason why I bothered to nourish my body, no matter how infrequently it was, so I could send that man straight to the place he sent my mate and unborn pup. “Allow yourself to live, that's all I'm saying…you have done enough. And you have sacrificed enough. Now you need to allow yourself to keep on living.” Cole said. “I wish it were that easy, Cole,” I responded regretfully. “But you don't even try at all…you…you keep punishing yourself, and now this, where is this going to take you?” He was referring to the contract marriage. He was the only one who knew of it other than me. Of course, he had discouraged me; maybe I wanted to hear that voice of reason, one more time, before I still plunged head-first into the trap anyway. “It's going to take me to revenge, and I don't care how we have the road and how many thorns I'll have to get through. As long as I get there at the end of the day, I'm fine…” Cole looked at me, the deepening tiredness being inscribed into his face with each line as we spoke. I wonder how long to keep up with this before he finally gives up. Just how much more would he put up with before he would wave the white flag and join everybody else who had left me? If he did, things would be so quiet, all the time, and I would finally be…all alone. Right …that's what I want, right? Suddenly, there was a series of knocks on the door, each one progressively getting more desperate than the last. I stood up, alert, and walked over to the door with fast, quick-paced steps. My Omega maids hardly panicked over anything. “What's going on?” I demanded to know as soon as I threw the door open. The maid, who was just about to frantically knock again, returned her hand to her side. “I'm sorry, Alpha…I tried to stop her, but she insisted and went anyway." My heart sank, my instincts already screaming in my ear before the maid gave the information that I had dreaded. There was no time, I ran to the East wing, not even bothering to explain to Cole why I had to bolt off like that. It didn't matter, all I had to do was stop her before she…before she could. My steps slowed down when I saw that the door was already ajar and her scent leaking into it…no…no no…! That was my late mate's room! “What are you doing here?”
