Six hours later, I stood in front of the mirror in Clara’s room, blinking back disbelief.
The girl looking back at me didn't look anything like me, gone were the second-hand clothes and shadows under my eyes, I was beautiful.
I wore a midnight-blue velvet dress that hugged me like a second skin, dusted with tiny silver stars that glittered everytime I moved.
My hair was styled into a sleek bun, and my beautiful red hair flowed down on my back reaching my waist.
The gloss on my lips added to the look on my face that surprised me, even Sheila and Clara were stunned by how beautiful my transformation had made me become.
Sheila handed me the wrapped totem box.
“Make sure Zayn sees me tonight. Don’t go back on your word.” Sheila said, and it sounded more like a threat than a normal reminder.
I nodded hastily and replied; “I’ll make sure of that”
I had no idea what fate had planned for tonight. But I knew one thing, nothing would ever be the same again, even if I get a mate or not.
When I entered the Grand Hall that night, the party was already in full swing.
There was music, laughter, love in the air, silk gowns, tuxedos, spilled champagne and smell of noble men filled the room.
At first, I thought they were staring because of the box in my hands. Until I saw them, the triplets, and I knew.
Kai’s playful smirk faltered into open-mouthed shock.
Calix’s hand froze halfway to his lips before he set his glass down, eyes narrowing like he was trying to solve a puzzle.
And Zayn… Zayn didn’t move at all.
He stared at me like he was seeing something impossible, like I was the answer to a question he hadn’t even dared to ask.
He just stood there, scanning every part of my body, like he was trying to take it in, to take in the beauty that was before his eyes.
At that moment, a thought crossed my mind, a very silly and unrealistic thought. I didn’t ever think Zayn was as charming as he was that night.
I made my way toward them, measuring every step.
When I stopped, I held the box out to Zayn. “You told me to bring this before nightfall.”
He took it, fingers brushing mine and in that instant, the world shifted.
I felt heat flow through my blood, flooding my veins like fire and lightning combined. My heart beat became faster like it would break out of my ribs, and I heard my wolf howl.
Not an ordinary howl, but the Anukai: the soul’s cry, the bond-call.
Zayn’s pupils dilated, and his hand tightened on the box. Around us, Kai and Calix exchanged sharp, wordless glances.
“How the hell—” Kai began.
“She has connections,” Calix cut in, though his voice was taut.
Zayn still hadn’t looked away from me. It was as if the Anukai spoke to his soul, locking us together.
He stepped forward and I instinctively stepped back.
I could hear my pulse in my ears, and for the first time, I wasn’t sure if it was fear or something far more dangerous.
After what felt like forever, he spoke, voice low and edged with something I couldn’t name.
“Elara…” His gaze searched mine, before he continued.
“What are you?”
