BLOOD RANSOM

728 Words
BLOOD RANSOM Jamal was a hardworking laborer who spent his days carrying blocks and mixing cement at a construction site. Life had never been easy for him, but he endured every hardship with the hope that one day things would get better. His greatest source of happiness was his wife, Aisha, who was heavily pregnant with twins. Despite their financial struggles, the couple eagerly awaited the arrival of their children. One afternoon, while carrying a concrete block across the construction site, Jamal received a frantic phone call from Aisha. Her voice was filled with pain and fear. She was in labor. The news struck him instantly. In shock, he lost control of the heavy block he was carrying. It crashed to the ground and shattered into pieces. Ignoring the angry shouts of his supervisor, Jamal abandoned his work and rushed out of the site. Owning neither a car nor a motorcycle, he desperately flagged down a tricycle and hurried home. When he arrived, he found Aisha struggling through intense labor pains. With the help of a neighbor, he got her into the tricycle, and they immediately set off for the hospital. Their journey, however, would never reach its destination as planned. As the tricycle sped through traffic, a reckless truck driver ignored a junction and crashed violently into them. The impact was devastating. The tricycle was crushed and thrown off the road. The driver died instantly, while Jamal and Aisha were left unconscious amid the wreckage. Good Samaritans who witnessed the accident rushed to help. Without wasting time, they transported the injured couple to the nearest hospital, where doctors immediately began emergency treatment. Hours later, Jamal slowly regained consciousness in a hospital ward. His body ached from multiple injuries, and his memories of the accident returned only in fragments. Confused and frightened, he immediately asked about Aisha. A nurse reassured him that she was alive and receiving medical attention. Before he could gather his thoughts, his phone began to ring. Relief washed over him when he saw his mother's number on the screen. His mother and younger sister, Zainab, had been traveling from Kaduna to Sokoto to help him and Aisha prepare for the birth of the twins. Believing it was his mother checking on him, he asked the nurse to hand him the phone. The moment he answered, his relief disappeared. Instead of hearing his mother's voice, he was greeted by the cold voice of an unknown man. Moments later, he heard the terrified cries of both his mother and Zainab in the background. The stranger revealed that they had been kidnapped while traveling and were now being held captive. Jamal's world shattered once again. The kidnapper informed him that if he wanted to see his mother and sister alive, he would have to cooperate. Before Jamal could plead for their release, the call ended, leaving him in fear and uncertainty. As he struggled to process the horrifying news, a doctor arrived with an update on Aisha's condition. Although she had survived the accident, the collision had caused severe complications with her pregnancy. Carrying twins had already placed strain on her body, and the injuries from the crash had made her condition critical. One of the unborn babies was showing signs of distress, and doctors warned that immediate surgery would be necessary to save both Aisha and the children. The cost of the operation and emergency care was estimated at five million naira. For Jamal, a laborer who lived from paycheck to paycheck, the amount was unimaginable. As if fate had not finished tormenting him, his phone rang again. It was the kidnapper. This time, the demand was clear. Ten million naira. Jamal had seventy-two hours to raise the ransom or his mother and younger sister would be killed. The reality of his situation became unbearable. To save Aisha and his unborn twins, he needed five million naira. To save his mother and sister, he needed ten million naira. Within a single day, a poor laborer who owned almost nothing had been forced into a desperate race against time to raise fifteen million naira or lose the people he loved most. For the first time in his life, Jamal felt completely helpless. Standing alone in a hospital filled with uncertainty, fear, and impossible choices, he realized that the greatest battle of his life had only just begun.
