The Real Bride’s Secret Affair

792 Words
--- Five Months Earlier VI, Lagos – Afternoon The sun filtered through the windows of the upscale tutoring center, dancing across crisp white walls and minimalist art. Samuel Nwosu was running late. Again. With his backpack slung over one shoulder and a half-eaten meat pie in hand, he pushed open the glass doors and muttered an apology to the front desk clerk. “Client’s in Room 4,” the woman said, not bothering to look up. Samuel straightened his shirt, ruffled his curls into place, and entered the room with his usual crooked smile. What he wasn’t prepared for was the girl seated at the table—legs crossed, sunglasses on indoors, scrolling through her phone like she owned the world. “Miss Obasi?” he asked hesitantly. She looked up, slowly lowering her shades. Chiamaka Obasi. Diamond-studded nails. Effortless attitude. Confidence like a shield. She gave him one look and smirked. “You’re the math genius my mother hired to babysit me?” “I’m the broke genius trying to get my sister through nursing school,” Samuel replied with a raised brow. She laughed, and just like that, the ice cracked. --- What started as tutoring turned into teasing. Teasing turned into talking. Talking turned into secret walks. Midnight texts. Long silences when their eyes said more than words could. For Chiamaka, Samuel was the only person who didn’t care about her name. For Samuel, she was the first girl who made him feel like he wasn’t chasing survival… he was chasing something real. But love between worlds like theirs was never meant to survive. Especially not when her engagement to Darian Obasi was announced three months into their affair. A deal between powerful families. Billion-dollar contracts. Media optics. And an inheritance clause. “I can’t marry him,” she had whispered one night in Samuel’s arms, tears on her cheeks. “He doesn’t even like me. He barely speaks unless it’s business.” “Then don’t,” Samuel had said. “Run away with me.” And she had said yes. --- Present Day Obasi Mansion – Darian’s Private Office The door slammed shut behind Darian as he dropped his phone on the desk, his knuckles white. The call from Auntie Ebere had confirmed everything. Chiamaka ran away with Samuel Nwosu. Eliana’s brother. The betrayal was nuclear. It wasn’t just the girl who ran from him—it was her family that wrecked his reputation, again. First the past. Now the present. It was all connected. He stared at the wedding photo on the corner of his desk—the one from yesterday’s staged ceremony. Eliana, beneath the veil, pretending to be the woman he thought he loved. But now he knew. Eliana wasn’t just a substitute bride. She was the sister of the man who stole everything from him. --- That evening Eliana was reading on the balcony when the door to her room burst open. Darian stormed in, eyes dark, fists clenched. “You lied,” he growled. She stood quickly. “What are you talking about?” “You knew. About Samuel. And Chiamaka.” Her blood ran cold. “No—” “Don’t lie to me again!” he shouted. “They ran away together. That’s why she didn’t show up to our wedding. And you’ve been in this house, pretending, all while protecting your little brother.” Tears burned her eyes. “I didn’t know they were together. I swear. I just found out yesterday.” His voice lowered into a whisper, more dangerous than a scream. “And you didn’t think to tell me?” “I was trying to protect him. Please—” “Protect him?” Darian laughed bitterly. “You married me under false pretenses, took his place, and you think this isn’t personal?” “It wasn’t meant to hurt you!” “Everything about you hurts, Eliana,” he spat. He backed her against the wall, his hands gripping the edge of the marble console beside her. He wasn’t touching her. But she could feel his rage everywhere. “I could have forgiven the lie,” he said. “But not the betrayal.” She stared into his eyes, her voice breaking. “I didn’t betray you.” He didn’t answer. Just walked away, slamming the door behind him. And locking it. Again. --- The Next Morning The news broke. “Chiamaka Obasi and Unknown Man Spotted at Airport in Ghana.” Photos blurred. Faces half-seen. But it was enough. The Obasi family was in chaos. Darian’s board was asking questions. And Eliana? She was now trapped in a mansion with a man who saw her not as a substitute— But as a traitor. ---
