Jack was gone by the time she woke up. No surprise there. He did leave a note. That was nice. Some sort of work crisis had called him away. As excuses go, it wasn’t too lame. He’d made a good effort. She respected that. His early departure left her with a whole morning to drink coffee and eat an apple fritter she’d brought up from the city. She was beginning to enjoy being an inert mass. As the morning wore on, she found herself looking outside and wanting to get out and about. Being cabin bound gave her too much time to think. She resisted the impulse to pull out her computer and phone and get sucked back into work mode. Instead, she turned on the TV to get caught up on the news. It had been a quiet holiday, crime-wise.
