Chapter 2

Back then, Henry and Claire's love story had set the entire city's elite social circle abuzz. He was a rough-hewn illegitimate son with hidden potential. She was the polished, elegant heiress of a prestigious family. It was straight out of a redemption romance. So even after Claire dumped him without warning, Henry still couldn't let her go for three years. He had even insisted on finding a replacement who looked exactly like her. And the moment the real Claire came back, he couldn't wait to kick the fake out. I sat by the balcony, clutching a stack of yellowed documents. One by one, I tossed them into the fire. If Henry wanted a divorce, there was no point keeping them anymore. The housekeeper pushed open my bedroom door without so much as knocking. "Miss Parker, sir wants you downstairs." I nodded and followed her down. A woman was sitting on the sofa. Henry was kneeling on one knee in front of her, carefully helping her change her shoes. "I'm sorry, Claire. If I hadn't been late, you wouldn't have had to wait for me and gotten your shoes dirty." The very same man who dominated the business world was treating a woman like she was the most precious thing in the world. The sting of it immediately burned behind my eyes. I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms, forcing down the emotions surging through my chest. "Hal…" The two people in the distance looked up at the same time. Henry's fingers stiffened for a moment, but he still slipped the slippers onto Claire's feet before standing. "Samantha, call me something else." I looked at the way he couldn't wait to draw a line between us and suddenly laughed. "I'm sorry, Mr. Foster. May I ask why you wanted to see me?" Henry frowned. He seemed unaccustomed to the coldness in my voice. He was about to say something when a soft, gentle voice interrupted him. "Hal, is this your wife?" No wonder he wanted me to change what I called him. So "Hal" was a name only Claire was allowed to use. "No." Henry denied it instinctively. "We're getting divorced soon. You know that, Claire. I…" "It's okay. I understand." Claire stood and walked over to Henry. The atmosphere between them was effortless and tender, shutting me out without either of them having to try. Her gaze lingered on my face. "Before I met you, I was actually curious about how much we really looked alike. You must have gone through a lot to make yourself look like this." I glanced at Henry. He said nothing. His eyes remained fixed on Claire. I laughed bitterly to myself and made myself as small as possible. "I'm sorry. I just wanted a chance to stay by Mr. Foster's side." "You don't need that anymore." Claire cut me off with undisguised disgust. "Hal has me now. I'll have him give you another fifty million, but you have to get plastic surgery again. I refuse to have the same face as someone like you!" A hundred million dollars was more than enough to buy my face. But I had no intention of making it that easy for them. I gently stroked my belly, doing my best to play the role of a helpless, clingy woman who wouldn't let go. "I'm sorry, Miss Sullivan. Given my current condition, I'm afraid I can't agree to that just yet." Claire went rigid. She turned sharply toward Henry. Henry finally tore his gaze away from her and looked at me. "Samantha, didn't I tell you that you had to get rid of it?" "Why, Mr. Foster? It's your child too." I tilted my head, looking at the two of them. "Don't you want to hear your child call you Dad?"
