Chapter 4 It Killed Their Baby

619 Words
Outside the door, Sabrina felt like something was squeezing her heart—crushing it. She could barely breathe. The next morning, Sabrina got ready to go out and keep looking for a lawyer. She didn't believe Warren could really control every lawyer in all of Juniper City. But before she could leave, Rachel blocked her way. "Sabrina, you don't really think Patricia faked that accident, do you?" Rachel—always so high and mighty—leaned in close. A cruel smile played on her lips. "I hit Patricia on purpose," she whispered. "And I framed Sheldon on purpose, too. Someone as low as you—why should you get to stay next to Warren? You stole him from me. So I went after your family instead..." Sabrina's blood rushed to her head. Then, in a flash, Rachel shoved her—hard—down the stairs. "Sabrina, believe me, even if I hurt you, Warren won't do a thing to me..." Sabrina hit the bottom. A sharp pain tore through her belly. Blood pooled beneath her. Warren came running at the noise. When he saw her, his heart clenched. "Sabrina!" He shot Rachel a dark look, then carefully scooped Sabrina up. "Rachel admitted it," Sabrina said, struggling through the pain, and pointed weakly at Rachel. "She did it all on purpose. Hitting my mom. Framing my brother. Even pushing me down the stairs. All of it—just to get you." Warren's face was full of anger. His eyes went cold when he looked at Rachel. Rachel stood at the top of the stairs, chin up, tears in her eyes—hurt and stubborn. "Oh, I hurt your precious wife," she said. "So what's it gonna be this time, Warren? Lock me up? Whip me?" His eyes churned with emotion. "Rachel," he said through his teeth, "stay here. We're not done." He tossed out the threat, then carried Sabrina straight to the hospital. At the hospital, Warren stayed by her side. Then his phone rang. It was his assistant. "Mr. Kaiser... Ms. Jewett ran off again..." Sabrina only caught a few words. Warren hung up and walked to her bed. He wouldn't quite meet her eyes. "Sabrina, something urgent came up at the firm. I have to go." She grabbed his hand. "Warren, I'm in so much pain. Can you please stay with me?" For a second, he looked torn. Then he said, "Be good. I'll come right back as soon as I'm done." 'That is it. The last bit of hope—gone.' Sabrina closed her eyes. She let go of his hand. They wheeled her into surgery. Warren didn't know that Sabrina had been pregnant. Rachel's push—it killed their baby, whom they had waited five years for. In the end, when Warren chose to walk away, it turned into a pool of blood. They had wanted this baby for so long. Five years ago, Warren's firm—Balance Law Firm—had landed the biggest case in its history. And Warren was the lead attorney. The night before the trial, the other side hired someone to take Warren out for good. But Sabrina jumped in and took the knife for him. Warren made it to court and won the case. Balance Law Firm became famous overnight, then rose straight to the top of Juniper City. But Sabrina? Her uterus was damaged. Getting pregnant would be hard from then on. After the trial, Warren rushed back from court. He crouched by her hospital bed, eyes red, and swore he would never betray her—not ever. To heal her body, Sabrina—who was also a lawyer—quit Balance Law Firm and chose to stay home.
