Chapter 29: Sparks and Shadows

928 Words
Morning arrived cold and grey over Seoul. Inside the towering Sinclair Cyber Security building, employees were already moving through the glass corridors like flowing currents of quiet urgency. Adrian Kroix walked in with his usual calm stride. To everyone in the company, he was simply Adrian-the talented young man who had joined both the dubbing division and the cyber security department. Efficient. Quiet. Mysterious. But behind the loose shirt beneath his jacket, the towel binding his chest reminded him of the truth he carried every day. A truth no one could ever discover. Not here. Not now. He stepped into the security operations floor where dozens of massive monitors displayed live surveillance feeds, encrypted data streams, and security reports from across the city. Several employees greeted him. "Morning, Adrian." "Morning." He nodded politely, taking his seat. But before he could even power on his system- A loud voice cut through the room. "Everyone gather." The room instantly fell silent. Damien Sinclair had arrived. He stood near the center of the operations floor, tall and imposing in a black suit that fit his powerful frame perfectly. Even standing still, he carried an intensity that made people uneasy. Adrian watched him quietly from his seat. Damien's sharp gaze moved slowly across the room. Until it stopped on Adrian. Something cold flickered in his eyes. "Especially you," Damien said. Adrian sighed internally and stood up. Here we go again. Employees exchanged uneasy glances. They had noticed the strange tension between the two men ever since Adrian joined the department. And it never ended well. Damien folded his arms. "We've had another disappearance." The room went still. Everyone knew what that meant. Another woman. Another victim of the unknown predator haunting the city. Damien continued. "She worked as a freelance editor who collaborated with our media division." A large image appeared on the screen behind him. A smiling young woman. Twenty-five years old. Beautiful. Alive in the photograph. Gone in reality. Adrian's jaw tightened. Damien spoke again. "Our security team is failing." His voice was calm, but the anger beneath it was unmistakable. "No forced entry. No witnesses. No clues." He slowly turned toward Adrian. "And yet... the kidnappings began shortly after a certain individual joined this company." The room went silent. Everyone knew exactly who he meant. Adrian's expression didn't change. But inside... His patience was thinning. "Are you accusing me?" Adrian asked calmly. Damien walked closer. "Should I not?" Adrian's eyes hardened slightly. "Maybe you should bring evidence instead of assumptions." The tension in the room became suffocating. Damien stopped right in front of him. They were almost the same height. Two powerful presences clashing in the middle of the room. Damien leaned slightly closer. "Careful," he said quietly. Adrian didn't move. "You're not my boss when you talk like that." A few employees gasped softly. Damien's eyes flashed. "You think you're untouchable?" Adrian shrugged slightly. "I think you enjoy blaming people." The next moment happened fast. Damien grabbed Adrian by the collar. Chairs scraped loudly across the floor as employees jumped back. Adrian grabbed Damien's wrist immediately. The two men stood locked in place, strength against strength. "You want to fight?" Damien muttered. Adrian's eyes flashed dangerously. "You started it." For a moment it looked like the entire office might explode into chaos. But then- Damien suddenly released him. He stepped back. The room exhaled. Damien turned away coldly. "Meeting dismissed." But before walking away, he said one last thing. "Adrian... my eyes are on you." Adrian watched him leave. And for the first time since joining the company... Something dangerous stirred inside him. Hatred. That Same Night The killer stood inside a dim alley across the street from a small apartment building. Rain dripped slowly from the edge of his hood. In his hand was a photograph. Another woman. Twenty-five years old. She worked occasionally with Sinclair Media. He had been watching her for days. Learning her routine. Her habits. Her weaknesses. The killer smiled faintly. "She'll do." Across the street, the woman stepped out of the building with grocery bags. She glanced around the quiet street. Nothing unusual. Nothing threatening. Just the calm silence of night. She began walking toward the corner. And that was when the killer moved. Quick. Silent. A shadow behind her. She felt something before she saw him. A presence. She turned- But it was too late. Something heavy struck the back of her head. The grocery bags fell to the ground. Oranges rolled across the wet pavement. The woman collapsed. The killer caught her before she hit the ground. He dragged her silently into the alley. Within seconds... She was gone. The Next Morning News spread through Seoul again. Another disappearance. Another twenty-five-year-old woman. Another case with no clues. Inside Sinclair Cyber Security, tension filled the air. Damien stood in front of the investigation board, studying the growing list of victims. Adrian stood across the room watching quietly. Something about the pattern bothered him. Deeply. There was a rhythm to the disappearances. A careful selection. A deliberate hunt. And whoever the killer was... He was patient. Extremely patient. Adrian crossed his arms slowly. His instincts were beginning to whisper something unsettling. But he wasn't ready to say it yet. Not until he was certain. Because if his instincts were right... Then the man hunting these women... Was not just a criminal. He was someone who had been searching for something... For years. And somehow... Adrian felt a strange chill down his spine. As if the hunt... Was slowly circling closer to him.
