Chapter 23: The sound that returns

994 Words
Sinclair Cybersecurity Floor — Next Morning Adrian arrived early. Earlier than everyone. The building lights were still adjusting to daylight. The silence on the cybersecurity floor allowed him to think clearly. But today — He couldn’t focus. His mind kept replaying last night. The escape. The confrontation. The moment the woman ran. And the moment the man dragged her back into darkness. His jaw tightened. He opened the system logs. Security footage. He began reviewing camera recordings from the perimeter of the building. Because something didn’t sit right. No forced entry. No alarms. Yet a woman had disappeared. That meant one of two things: Either someone inside helped… Or the attacker knew exactly how the surveillance system worked. Adrian fast-forwarded through footage. He watched people entering. Employees leaving. Cars passing. Normal. Then— He paused. Rewound. Played again. There. A hooded figure walking past the building entrance. His face hidden. His head slightly bowed. The footage quality wasn’t perfect. But the posture looked familiar. Adrian leaned closer. He zoomed in. The man walked casually past the cameras. Too casually. Almost as if he knew where the blind spots were. Adrian replayed the clip. And then— He heard it. Soft. Barely audible. A sound buried inside the audio track. He increased the volume. Static cleared slightly. And there it was. A whistle. A slow, controlled melody. Adrian froze. His heartbeat slowed. He rewound again. Played the segment. Whistle. Pause. Whistle. The same pattern. The same tone. The same rhythm. His fingers tightened around the edge of the desk. He had heard that whistle before. Two nights ago. When the hooded man brushed past him on the street. The whistle had followed. At the time, he ignored it. Now— It was inside the official security recording. Meaning: The killer had been recorded. The killer had walked past surveillance. And he had intentionally whistled. Adrian whispered under his breath: “Arrogant.” The killer wasn’t hiding. He was marking territory. Leaving a signature. Adrian saved the footage immediately. Encrypted it. Marked it as priority evidence. Then he forwarded it quietly to a secure internal investigation folder. He did not inform everyone yet. Not until he understood more. He leaned back slowly. His eyes darkened. The whistle wasn’t random. It was intentional. A warning. Or a message. Meanwhile — Underground Facility The woman who had tried to escape lay chained to the wall. Her wrists bruised from the struggle. Her breathing uneven. Her body still trembling from fear and exhaustion. Footsteps echoed above. She flinched automatically. The door opened. He entered. Mask on. Silent. He walked toward her slowly. Not rushing. Not angry. Just observing. He crouched in front of her. “You surprised me.” She avoided his eyes. He tilted his head slightly. “You fought.” He stood and walked around her slowly. “I like resistance.” He stopped behind her. His voice dropped. “Most women scream and collapse.” “You didn’t.” He leaned closer. “So now…” He walked back into her field of vision. “Now I am interested.” She shook her head violently. He laughed softly. “Don’t misunderstand.” He crouched again. His fingers gently traced the stitches on her lips. She shuddered. He examined her face carefully. “You almost escaped.” A pause. “You reached the door.” His eyes narrowed. “Which means someone taught you how to move.” He stood. Walked toward the wall of monitors. He replayed footage from the night. Security cameras inside the compound had captured her attempt. The moment she slipped past the corridor. The moment she disabled one lock. The moment she ran. He studied it with fascination. Then— He paused. Zoomed in. Replayed a section. She had fought differently. Strategically. Efficiently. Not like a frightened victim. Like someone trained. His voice turned thoughtful. “Interesting…” He turned slowly to look at her. “You learned how to defend yourself.” He tilted his head. “Who trained you?” She stared at him with pure hatred. He smiled behind the mask. “Sinclair employees.” He connected the dots quickly. “Ah.” His eyes gleamed. “Damien Sinclair.” He laughed quietly. “He teaches women to fight.” His gaze returned to her. “That makes my work harder.” He stepped closer again. “Which makes you more valuable.” Her eyes widened in fear. He continued calmly: “Because if women start resisting…” He leaned down slightly. “Then I must adapt.” He straightened. And spoke quietly to the room. “From now on…” “I will monitor training sessions.” “Understand their techniques.” “Study their defenses.” His eyes returned to her. “Then break them.” She shook violently. He turned toward the door. Before leaving, he added: “And next time…” He paused. “Don’t run.” The door closed. Silence returned. Police Station — Same Night Detectives gathered around a large monitor. Adrian had sent the whistle footage anonymously through the internal reporting system. Now investigators were reviewing it. One detective pointed at the waveform. “There.” “Do you hear it?” The whistle played again. Another officer leaned forward. “Why would a killer whistle?” The detective replied quietly: “It’s confidence.” “Or arrogance.” “Or a signature.” They marked it as evidence. And for the first time— They had something audio-based. Something traceable. Meanwhile — Adrian’s Apartment Adrian sat in silence. His laptop open. He replayed the whistle again. And again. His eyes narrowed. He whispered: “You made a mistake.” “You left proof.” His fingers began typing. He started analyzing the audio frequency. Trying to isolate background noise. Trying to extract location metadata. Trying to trace the sound to a source. Because now— The killer had unintentionally exposed himself.
