Chapter 48- Midnight Confessions

893 Words
The office lights hummed softly, the polished floors reflecting the glow like a mirror of their tension. Most employees had gone home hours ago, leaving the vast space eerily quiet, except for the occasional tap of a keyboard or the distant hum of the elevator. Adrian worked at his desk, reviewing files for the cybersecurity project, but he couldn't focus. Every glance toward Damien's office made his chest tighten, every shadow along the hall felt like it carried the weight of unspoken words. Damien, as usual, was bent over his desk, the familiar crease between his brows deepened by stress. But tonight, there was no sign of the usual arrogance or playboy charm. He was... tense. And Adrian, though trying to convince himself otherwise, noticed how much Damien's presence affected him-how the heat of jealousy and the pull of unfamiliar feelings tangled in his chest. The phone buzzed on Adrian's desk. A reminder that the files for the Sinclair Cyber Security integration project were due at midnight. He glanced at the clock-11:47 PM. Only minutes left, but the project required both him and Damien's approval. And so, by unspoken necessity, they would work together... alone. Adrian approached Damien's desk, quietly. "We need to finalize these files. The integration report... it won't submit itself." Damien didn't look up immediately. Instead, he tapped the corner of his pen against the table. "I know." The word was simple, but the silence that followed was heavy. Adrian shifted his weight, uncomfortable. Why does it feel like walking on a minefield every time I'm near him? Damien finally looked up, and their eyes met. There it was again-that pull, the subtle charge between them that neither wanted to acknowledge. Adrian's heart stuttered. "You're... unusually quiet tonight," Damien said, voice low, almost a murmur. Adrian forced a shrug. "Focus. We need to finish this before midnight." But Damien didn't move. He leaned back slightly, eyes scanning Adrian's face. "You... didn't go home yet." "I wanted to make sure these reports were complete." Adrian's voice was calm, but internally he was buzzing. Damien's lips quirked in a faint smirk-not teasing, but something more dangerous. "You always make yourself useful, don't you?" Adrian clenched his jaw. "And you're always... unnecessarily intimidating." Damien's smirk widened, but only slightly. "It's called leadership. Maybe one day you'll understand." They worked in tense silence for the next half hour, the only sounds the typing of keys and the faint rustle of papers. But every so often, Adrian noticed Damien glancing at him-subtle, almost imperceptible, but unmistakably there. And every glance made Adrian's stomach twist. At 11:58 PM, Damien leaned back, rubbing his eyes. "We're done here." Adrian's hands froze mid-typing. "Done?" "Yes. Finally." Damien's tone was clipped, almost cold. "Send it to the server." Adrian hit the upload button, and the report submitted with a soft ding. Silence returned. For a moment, it felt like the office itself was holding its breath. Then Damien said, quietly, almost too quiet: "You stayed late... for me." Adrian blinked, taken aback. "...It's part of my job." Damien's gaze sharpened, holding him in place. "No. Not tonight. Tonight, you stayed for me." Adrian swallowed hard, aware of his pulse hammering in his ears. He opened his mouth to speak, but Damien turned away abruptly, rubbing his temple. "Forget I said anything. Go home." Adrian hesitated. "...You?" Damien didn't answer. He simply gestured toward the door. Adrian obeyed, but the heat in his chest refused to cool. Victor Sinclair's Suspicion The next morning, Damien's father, Victor Sinclair, arrived at the office unexpectedly. His presence alone caused a ripple through the company floor. He approached Adrian's desk, hands clasped behind his back. "Adrian Knox." His voice was quiet, but commanding. "A word." Adrian stood, following Victor to a private conference room. The older man's gaze was sharp, studying Adrian carefully. "I've noticed something," Victor began, voice low. "Damien has... changed." Adrian tilted his head. "Changed how?" Victor's eyes bore into him. "He's distracted. Obsessive. Uncharacteristically emotional. And it started the moment you joined Sinclair Cyber Security." Adrian froze. He can't know... Victor continued. "You have a way of... getting under his skin. I don't know what it is, but it's affecting him professionally and personally. Do you realize that?" Adrian's throat tightened. "I... I didn't do anything." Victor studied him for a long moment. "Be careful, Adrian. Some distractions are dangerous. Especially when they come from people who... aren't supposed to be in his life." Adrian nodded, swallowing hard, the weight of Victor's words settling heavily on his shoulders. He's right, Adrian thought. I can't... I shouldn't... I can't let him see me like this. Not yet. The tension between Adrian and Damien didn't dissipate after Victor left. In fact, it grew. Every glance, every accidental touch, every unspoken word seemed to fuel the storm brewing quietly between them. Damien tried to maintain his distance, reminding himself he wasn't... whatever he feared he was becoming. And Adrian, despite being careful, felt the unfamiliar pull of jealousy and desire he couldn't name. For now, the office remained a battlefield of subtle glances, unspoken thoughts, and stolen moments. And somewhere deep inside, Adrian felt a dangerous truth forming: no matter how much Damien tried to push him away, he wasn't going anywhere. The night was long, but the war had only just begun.
