Chapter 49- Shadows in the Glass

870 Words
The office was quieter than usual, the hum of computers and the soft clacking of keyboards echoing against the glass walls. The last of the interns had left, leaving only a handful of employees scattered in the open floor. Adrian sat at his workstation, shoulders rigid, eyes scanning lines of code for inconsistencies in the cybersecurity audit. But his focus was fractured. Every so often, his gaze flicked toward Damien's office-just enough to catch him leaning back, arms crossed, jaw clenched, eyes hooded as if he were trying to disappear inside himself. The subtle tension between them was palpable, and Adrian could feel it like an electric current, threading through the open space between their desks. There was a tug in his chest he didn't want to name. This isn't right... he's Damien Sinclair. He's untouchable, and I... I can't even begin to understand what this is. Damien, as if reading his thoughts, pushed himself up and strode across the floor. The echo of his polished shoes seemed to vibrate in Adrian's chest. He stopped by Adrian's desk, leaning on it casually, as though the proximity was casual, but every nerve in Adrian's body screamed otherwise. "Working late again," Damien said, voice low, controlled, almost teasing-but there was a sharpness beneath it. "I like to make sure everything is perfect," Adrian replied, straightening, trying to maintain the façade of a composed young man, though the heat in his chest betrayed him. Damien smirked. "Perfection... you mean looking busy while I do all the real work?" Adrian's lip twitched. "Funny. I didn't know sarcasm was your strong suit today." Damien raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by the challenge. "You'd be surprised. I save it for the moments that matter." His gaze lingered on Adrian just a moment too long, and Adrian felt the pull again. The office door creaked open, and Hana Choi's cheerful voice pierced the tension. "Damien! I left some documents on your desk-" She froze when she saw Adrian and Damien standing so close. Damien's posture stiffened, and Adrian's stomach sank. Hana's eyes flicked between them, curiosity quickly morphing into calculation. She tilted her head, sensing the subtle chemistry simmering between the two. "Uh... never mind, I'll come back later," Hana said, forcing a smile but failing to mask the spark of jealousy. Damien's jaw tightened slightly as Hana left, and for the first time that day, Adrian noticed a flicker in Damien's eyes-an almost imperceptible protective instinct. It was brief, subtle, but it set Adrian's heart racing. Why do I feel like he's... defending me? The hours dragged, and Damien found reasons to hover near Adrian's desk, offering corrections, leaning in to explain technical points, brushing hands against Adrian's as they examined the same screen. Adrian's chest tightened each time, a storm of emotions he didn't dare name twisting inside him. And Damien, for all his practiced composure, couldn't quite hide the way his eyes softened when Adrian looked up at him, waiting for guidance, for acknowledgment. From the shadows of the building, however, another presence lurked. The serial killer remained unseen, a figure watching from the darkness, invisible cameras tracking movement, following the rhythm of the office lights. He noticed every glance, every small smile, every subtle hesitation between Adrian and Damien, his mind twisting with obsession and curiosity. Are they...? he wondered, unable to place the connection, but certain of Adrian's importance. He would wait, he would observe, and when the time came, he would strike-not at Adrian yet, but at the women in the company, hoping to lure her out. Back in the office, Damien finally broke the silence. "You've been... unusually good tonight." His tone was careful, almost wary. "Faster, smarter. More... focused." Adrian's brow furrowed. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?" Damien shrugged, looking away, but the slight twitch in his lips betrayed him. "Maybe. Or maybe it's... dangerous to notice how competent you are." Adrian blinked, caught off guard. "Dangerous?" Damien leaned closer, voice dropping. "Sometimes, being... impressive... makes me forget myself." He straightened abruptly, as if saying more would betray him. Adrian's stomach knotted. He's thinking about me like that. But he can't... he can't want me like that... Hana's intrusion earlier had left a sting, and Adrian felt a surge of jealousy he wasn't meant to feel. He stood abruptly, pretending to stretch. "I'll finish this at home," he said, voice clipped, but his eyes never left Damien's. Damien's gaze followed him, lingering, calculating. "Fine. But..." He paused, voice low and unreadable. "...don't get lost in the dark." Adrian blinked, unsure if it was concern or subtle ownership. Either way, it made his chest ache. As he walked toward the elevator, Adrian's thoughts spun: Why does he make me feel like this? Why does my chest hurt when he looks at me like that? He shook his head, trying to chase away the dangerous pull. Yet as the elevator doors closed, he felt Damien's eyes burn into his back. And in the shadows outside the building, the serial killer watched still. He noted the tension, the unspoken connection, the small stolen moments of intimacy, and he smiled to himself, patient and calculating. Soon... soon I will know everything.
