Chapter Four

1122 Words
I sat watching the sun fall behind slate clouds, there was a heavy storm coming our way. All pack members were accounted for at the packhouse and I was waiting for word about the rogues. More had been spotted in the past week and though we had been successful at driving them away from our territory, it felt like there was something coming for us apart from the storm brewing. Kane was unsettled and even more rowdy since Seraphina's arrival. We had the overpowering drive to not only protect our pack but her also. Never had I felt such a feeling bubbling underneath my skin, it felt warm and out of place. Never had I been one to care about a woman in such a conventional sense. I wasn't concerned with commitments of the romantic variety. The pack was my concern and building myself into the wolf that would lead them and protect them was my drive. My mother had told me many times that I was cold and almost void of the more gentle emotions, that I was a savage beast. To that, she wasn't wrong. There are many things I have done for the pack that would make one wonder how on the level my brain was. But I always knew I'd never hurt my pack so I was never concerned. Though now I was feeling confused about these feelings I didn't recognise. I'd spent every spare minute of my time watching over Seraphina as she slowly healed and gained some of her strength back. There were never many words exchanged between us but I think we'd come to a silent understanding. Yes, we were fated mates, but I needed to earn her trust for her to even think about agreeing to be my mate. My chest swelled with an ache at the thought of her rejecting me and Kane howled and whimpered against it. And there is where I sat watching intently as Seraphina slowly slipped her legs from the hospital bed and attempted to stand. Her knees wobbled and within a split second I was by her side dteaying her even though she'd been adimant about me not touching her. Her eyes glowered at me and I held back a chuckle. She was such a fiery woman and if looks could kill, I'd be scorched ashes upon the floor. "If you'd just allow me to carry you-" "Absolutely not," she cut me off with a growl, "It's enough that I've allowed you to convince me to stay till I am fully recovered and further so, more than enough to let you make me a room here." However, as she spoke I felt her intertwining her arm with mine to steady her balance as we walked towards the room that she'd fought so hard against me getting ready for her. I'd figured out that Seraphina liked the dark gothic romance aesthetic, so I spent time painting the walls of her room a deep shade of grey and her ceiling black to match the thick plush black carpet I'd had installed. Her bed was a four-poster mammoth made from carved wood and stained black with deep plum bedding accented with grey and more black. There was a private bathroom connected to her room that sported white tiles and a large claw-footed bath with enough room for two. I had made sure she had all the creature comforts she could ask for, including shelves of books and a carved vanity table adorned with a variety of cosmetics and perfumes. There was a wardrobe lined with clothes that were just her size and shoes for every occasion. It may have been all too much, but truth be told, there was a part of me almost worried about making her uncomfortable which drove me to create an environment that was just for her. I was like a kid trying desperately to impress his first crush. An audible gasp left her enticing mouth as I opened the door, "Oh Damien..." The sound of my name on her lips sent a shudder of exctasy through my body and I craved to hear it again. I wanted to hear her scream my name while being completely overtaken by pleasure. My thoughts began to trail off as she slowly took in the room. Thought of how she tasted and what kind of noises I could make her cry on that bed and how sweet she would look wrapped around me. It took all of my being to not throw her onto the bed and begin devouring her. She was simply perfect and I begged the Luna Goddess to make her say that she'd be mine. "I think I'm going to bathe and take a nap." Her voice was still airy as she looked around in disbelief. "This is a beautiful room, thank you. I know I haven't been very pleasant but I am grateful to you." I was taken back by her gratitude. I never expected or really cared for a thank-you. After all, she was my mate and I wanted to treat her like a Goddess, but as a small smile crept across my thanks, I nodded. "I shall leave you to your room. There is a phone in the top drawer of your bedside table. If you need anything, just text or call me. My number is the only one on there." Gently, I closed the door behind me. I was met with the sounds of urgent footsteps catching up to me. "Damien, we have a problem." I glanced to my side, it was Tobias who was my second in command. Tobias was an extremely loyal friend and took the safety of the pack as seriously as I did. "Rogues?" I asked as we walked down a flight of stairs and into the main area of the house. He nodded. "But we've spotted a pack of them just beyond our territory and it looks like they are heading into the neighboring town." His thick voice was urgent and I knew he wanted to go after them. "Why would they be heading into town? What's there for them? Rogues don't usually travel into heavily human populated areas." And it was true, Rogues avoided humans and kept to trying to move in on other packs. Humans feared what they didn't understand and that fear always leads to violence against that which they don't understand. He seemed to mull my words over before responding. "They usually don't band together either. They might be searching for something? To lay claim to land of their own?" I shook my head, this was off, really off. "Let's sit down with my father and try and find out what they are planning."
