💠Chapter 5— Fire and Ice

1086 Words
The night after the gala was sleepless. Selena stood before the glass walls of her penthouse, the city lights glimmering like scattered diamonds below. Her reflection stared back at her — the same face, the same eyes — yet everything inside her had changed. Her fingers traced the diamond phoenix pin still in her hair. Lucien’s voice echoed in her mind: > “Rebirth suits you.” It wasn’t possible. He couldn’t know. No one could. And yet… those eyes. That calm, knowing gaze. It was as if he’d seen her soul burn once before. Selena took a deep breath. No distractions. This life wasn’t meant for curiosity or romance. It was meant for revenge. --- 🌹 The Plan She sat at her desk, the one she’d once used to sign business proposals and charity invitations. Now it held a different purpose. On the screen before her glowed the faces of her enemies — Ethan Cross and Aria Cole. Ethan: the charming businessman who had pretended to love her while plotting to steal her father’s company. Aria: the best friend who had envied her life until envy became poison. Selena smiled faintly — the kind of smile that never reached her eyes. > “Let’s see how it feels,” she whispered, “to lose everything you built on my ashes.” Her fingers danced across the keyboard. Years of business training under her father had made her a strategist. She moved money, leaked files, and set silent traps — every click a step toward their ruin. A hidden account, a forged contract, an investor scandal waiting to ignite — everything arranged with surgical precision. By dawn, she leaned back in her chair, exhausted but satisfied. Phase one had begun. --- 🥀 The Morning Storm When she arrived at Varyn Global Headquarters, the staff’s whispers followed her through the glass halls. “Miss Varyn looks different.” “She’s… colder.” “She looks powerful.” She didn’t mind. In her first life, she’d been too kind, too trusting. Now, kindness was a mask she wore when useful. In her father’s private office, Damian looked up from his tablet. “You’re early. Didn’t you stay at the gala until midnight?” Selena smirked. “I’ve learned that sleep is a luxury, not a necessity.” Damian’s brow arched. “That’s new.” Alexander entered then, his presence immediately commanding. “My daughter, the world hasn’t stopped talking about you. Half the investors are already asking for a partnership under your name.” “I’ll handle it,” she said smoothly. “I’ve already started reviewing our competitors’ files.” Her father looked at her with approval — unaware that the “competitor” she was targeting was Ethan Cross. “Be careful,” Alexander said. “The Cross Corporation is desperate. A man like Ethan won’t hesitate to play dirty.” Selena smiled faintly. “Then he’ll meet someone worse.” --- 🔥 The Encounter That evening, as she exited the Varyn Tower, a familiar car was parked at the curb — sleek, black, and far too expensive for anyone but one man. The door opened before she could pass. Lucien Draegor stepped out, crisp in a dark gray suit, the same quiet power radiating from him like gravity. “Miss Varyn,” he greeted. “Leaving work this late? Or plotting a corporate takeover?” Selena stopped, meeting his gaze. “And if it’s both?” His lips curved slightly. “Then I might finally have competition.” She crossed her arms. “You’re awfully interested in my business for a rival.” “I’m not interested in your business,” he said softly. “I’m interested in you.” Something in his tone made her pulse skip. She hated it. He was too calm, too observant — like someone who’d seen her darkness and didn’t flinch. “I don’t believe in distractions,” she said coolly. He took a step closer, the air between them tightening. “Neither do I. But sometimes, a distraction can burn brighter than the goal.” His hand brushed hers briefly — a deliberate, feather-light touch. The contact sent a shiver through her, unwanted but undeniable. Selena took a slow breath. “Careful, Mr. Draegor. You might start a fire you can’t control.” He leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper. “Who says I want to control it?” Then he stepped back, his expression unreadable. “I’ll see you soon, Miss Varyn. Business will bring us together again. It always does.” He left her standing there — heart racing, mind clouded. --- 🩸 The First Strike Two days later, chaos erupted in Cross Corporation. A leaked report exposed fraudulent partnerships, and the company’s stock began to plummet. The board was in uproar. Reporters flooded the building. Ethan slammed his desk, eyes wild. “Who the hell leaked this?” Aria paced nervously. “It can’t be traced — whoever did this was careful. Too careful.” Ethan’s jaw clenched. “Someone’s playing a game with me.” And across the city, in her penthouse office, Selena watched the news with calm satisfaction. > “Checkmate,” she whispered. Her phone buzzed — an unknown number. She answered, voice smooth. “Selena Varyn.” > “Impressive work,” came Lucien’s voice. Her breath caught. “You?” > “Let’s just say I appreciate a woman who knows how to strike where it hurts. But next time, hide your trail better. A few of your moves were… recognizable.” Selena froze. “You were watching me.” > “Not watching,” he said. “Protecting. For now.” The line clicked off. She sat back, her pulse pounding. He knew. He knew. But why wasn’t he exposing her? --- 🌑 That night, as rain drummed against her windows, Selena stood alone — the city glowing beneath her. Her reflection in the glass looked almost like a stranger: colder, stronger, but lonelier, too. She pressed a hand to the window. “I won’t fall for anyone again,” she whispered. “Not even you, Lucien Draegor.” But in her heart, something had already begun to stir — a dangerous warmth she couldn’t quite silence. And far away, in his own office, Lucien watched her name glowing on his screen, his lips curving faintly. > “My reborn queen,” he murmured. “You have no idea who you’re really playing with.” --
