Amber POV
We pull up to Lindsay’s incredibly large house, about 2 miles from Sage’s farm. You can tell it’s already crowded by the amount of cars along the street, many of them BMW’s and Porches. Sage and I climb out of the third row, and Everett helps us out of the car. He really is a gentleman.
I feel a surge of energy and a fresh linen and sandlewood scent hits my nose. Hmm, that’s weird. I ignore it as we head inside the packed mansion. Our peers were everywhere, but most of the partygoers are older ones who have already graduated. Adam goes off with some of his friends, and Everett and Will go to look for drinks. Sage, Sam and I look around us at the crazy party we have just walked into.
There’s two different couples making out on the winding staircase to our left. And an intense game of beer pong with at least twenty people on our right. In front of us is the ballroom where everyone is dancing, and at least a hundred people are dancing and grinding on one another, EDM music pumping from the speakers all around the room. I can tell that not everyone here is from our pack, and that many of them are pack warriors from how big and muscular they look.
Suddenly, Sage stops, her eyes wide, and a huge smile forms on her face.
“OMG!” Sage exclaims. “Mate!” Across the room stands a tall, handsome guy with beach blonde messy hair and awesome style, Cyrus. He is staring at Sage with such intensity, and a smile grows on his lips as he starts towards us. Sage starts running, looking amazing in her green dress as her long legs carry her to her mate, and she jumps into his huge arms, he spins her around and brings her into a romantic kiss.
“Damn, that was fast,” Samuel says to me.
“Well, she has been waiting for him since she turned 18,” I reply. “I’m so happy she has found her mate, it’s like she knew it would be him!”
They pull back from their kiss as Sam and I approach, and stare at each other with lust.
“Umm Cyrus, this is my best friend, Amber!” Sage says as Cyrus puts her down. He is at least a head taller than her, and they really look good together.
“Hey it’s nice to meet you,” Cyrus says to me, shaking my hand.
“Hi!” I answer. “I’m so glad Sage has finally found her mate.”
Cyrus pulls Sage into him by her waist, looking down at her with an intense happiness that I can’t even describe. I guess I’ll find out when I find my mate someday. If that ever happens. Sometimes it takes us years to find our mates, or sometimes they even reject us.
“Me too,” Sage says with a huge smile.
“Well, maybe we should leave you two to talk,” Samuel says, gesturing to me to come with him.
“Yeah, I’ll be over here if you need me girl,” I say to Sage. “Congrats again you two.”
Sage is so happy that she finally has her mate. It’s supposed to be an unbreakable, intense bond only between each other.
Samuel and I head over to the snack table, awkwardly passing multiple couples making out and feeling each other up. Many teens choose to wait for their mates to do anything like me, but others like to experiment before they turn 18, or if they haven’t found their mate yet.
The party rages on, pop dance music pounding around us, and I linger around with Sam, Everett eventually jointing us as well.
“I can’t believe you’re turning 18 tomorrow Amber,” Everett tells me. It feels like just yesterday we were out on the farm making mud pies together.”
I laugh, remembering the exact moment he’s talking about. When I first became friends with Sage, I had been afraid to talk to her brothers, since I had been traumatized having to flee my old pack and seeing just how ugly my uncles wife was for the first time. Sage had went to the bathroom, so I was stuck outside with Sam and Everett, the two older boys playing somewhere else on their own. Everett saw how uncomfortable I was with them, so he scooped up a big handful of mud and plopped it right on his head to make me laugh. He kept doing it too, until my belly hurt from how hard I was laughing. That’s when I realized, the boys were exactly like their sister. Kind and caring, and selfless too.
“I’m really grateful for our friendship, Everett,” I tell him. “Honestly I don’t know what I would do without you guys, you’re like my family.” I say with a smile.
“You know,” he says with a grin. “I always thought that you would be my first. First kiss, first love, and mate. We could be chosen mates, f*** what the moon goddess says!”
I gasp. “Everett, don’t talk about the moon goddess in such a way, she is creator of all of us and her word means everything to me. You know I love you, but in a brotherly way. I am waiting for my mate which the moon goddess chose for me.” I try hard to let him down easy, but it wasn’t hard to miss the disappointment on his face.
“I know you want to be just friends, but I can’t Amber. I’m in love with you,” he says close to my ear. I’m getting uncomfortable at this point and all I want to do is leave.
“Everett, I’m sorry but I can’t say the same. You’ve been in my life for five years now and I appreciate you always supporting me. Sage is like a sister to me, and you guys are like my brothers. I don’t want you to be upset…” I trail off.
The look in Everett’s eyes changes from disappointment to rage fast, and he is fuming.
“You selfish b****!” Everett shouts. He’s right in my face at this point, towering over me. The people around us are starting to stare, but no one steps in. “I’ve always been so nice to you, I’ve always given you compliments, and THIS is how you treat me?! You will always be the pack LOSER, and I hope you never find your mate!” He steps towards me again and I flinch. I don’t believe he would ever hurt me, but you never really know I guess, so I run off.
At this point I’m hyperventilating and I just need to get OUT of here! I storm towards the front door and as I’m about to open it, someone grabs my shoulder. I immediately swing my arm back to defend myself, but I realize it’s just Sage, and I fling myself into her arms sobbing.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me I should’ve just allowed myself to be with him he was always such a good guy, but all my life I’ve been waiting for my mate tell me what to do Sage!”
“I’m going to go KICK his a** right now Amber! The way he treated you is absolutely ridiculous and I will not stand for it!” Sage had her rage face on, and she is not to be messed with. “I’m so sorry that he did that to you Amber he’s such an i***t! Go cool off outside and I’ll meet you in a bit. But in the meantime if you need me just tell okay!”
“Okay Sage I don’t know what I would do without you, I’m so glad you’re my best friend,” I give her one last squeeze and then I rush out of the door, the fresh air feeling so good on my hot skin. Wolves are naturally hot, but I’m feeling especially sweaty after that interaction.
I check the time on my watch, and I see that it’s eleven pm. The time went by so fast! I wander around outside of the mansion, coming up to the forest line. I know there’s a lake nearby through the forest on the edge of the pack, and I decide to take a walk there to clear my head. My birthday is tomorrow and I’m not going to let anything ruin my night!
