Ariana
Vlad was pacing in the throne room, furious as hell, while I was frozen from shock. After the king basically ordered that we leave the party to somewhere private, I got dragged along with them by the king’s guards all the way here, and when Vlad asked if the king was gonna reject me in private, the king had said he was gonna accept me as his mate.
No. Oh gods. Please no.
“What? That’s my ex, father! You cannot accept her as your mate! You have to reject her.” Vlad pointed out, seething angrily.
When the king crossed the room to stand before him, he paled a little and averted his gaze from the king’s stony expression as the king began to speak.
“Do you think I want to accept her as my mate? Much less your ex of all people…” he spat the last word out angrily.
“But I have no choice but to! Have you forgotten about the curse? The males in the royal family cannot reject their fated mate no matter what… else they’d die.”
My eyes widened in shock and I stopped breathing. Judging by the expression across Vlad’s face, it was clear that he had forgotten about that.
I was still very shocked by that piece of information. I didn’t know curses like that existed and I thought they were now myths seeing as the world has advanced so much.
“O- oh… I—“ Vlad was still speaking when the king waved him off, face still contoured in anger.
“Enough.” He snapped and Vlad clamped his mouth shut.
The king turned away from his son and let out a groan as he dragged a hand through his hair, and I flinched from fear at that sound, while dwelling on the fact that the king wasn’t gonna reject me like I had hoped.
I hoped to find my fated mate tonight, but I never could have predicted that it would be the alpha king of all people! I definitely don’t want to be mated to him. He might be the king, but being forced to get mated to him already sounded like my biggest nightmare yet.
I’ve always hated this man since I could remember. Whenever I think of my father, of if he’s alive after being banished for something he never did, I always find my hatred for him growing. Whenever I visited my mother, I always hated him even more.
I agreed to date Vlad because I believed he was different from his father.
Now this vile alpha doesn’t want to reject me because of some curse that has nothing to do with me!
“B- but can’t it be helped? You can mate anyone but her.” Vlad pulled me out of my thoughts.
“Remember why your elder brother died? It's because he rejected his fated mate. If I could, of course I’d reject her immediately. You know I planned to stay mateless till I meet my end.” The king bit out almost immediately and my eyes widened.
The entire pack went into mourning when the king’s first son died about ten years ago. I remember being happy about that because I thought that was karma for him ruining my family’s life. I had no idea it was because of this curse.
Vlad had a pinched expression on as he stepped back, still looking furious. Without another word, he turned and left the throne room, angrily slamming the door shut.
I didn’t understand why he was so angry, especially after telling me he never cared about me, so it definitely couldn’t be out of jealousy. Perhaps he doesn’t want his father accepting a slave as his mate because it might embarrass him?
That has to be it.
When the king turned towards me, I felt my breathe seize, my heart dropping to my feet from fright because now we were alone. Before he could get a word out, the doors opened and the king’s mistress sauntered in to press against the king’s side.
“You’re yet to reject her, my king? You should do that fast so we can head to bed together then I’d help you relieve your stress…” she licked his chin at the end of her sentence and disgust settled in my stomach.
Ugh. So gross.
“Unfortunately, Aria, I cannot reject her.” The king said dejectedly and Aria’s eyes widened before she glanced at me with an accusatory expression like it was my fault.
“But my king…” she began but the king gently shifted her away then spoke.
“Go to bed, Aria. I’ll join you later.” His voice was tense and brisk. Aria clearly wanted to argue but settled on nodding and hugging the king like she hadn’t seen him in months before turning and wordlessly leaving, but not before glaring at me one last time.
With the king and I alone once again, I almost crumbled when his eyes settled on me. I was so nervous that it was hard to breathe, especially as his intense eyes raked over my body.
“You.” He stated solely and I flinched, eyes widening even more and the grip on my dress tightening. I wished I could flee right now, but my feet felt glued to the ground.
“You know what’s gonna happen next, right?” He stated as he looked me up and down again. I swallowed emptily and shook my head, already feeling light headed from not breathing.
“I’ll have to take you as my mate and wife, till whenever I manage to break this curse.”
