Scott grasped his chin between thumb and forefinger, a thousand-mile stare in his eyes. ‘I detest the man’s record, Marty and heaven forbid you should think I attempt to make light of the heinous deeds he has done. But you and I know our aim, undoubtedly motivated from different angles, is to determine the fate of a man who was taught to kill, almost by rote. Pelops was born, bred and abandoned to the whim of circumstance in the most negative of eras in modern European history, in the most oppressive of regimes. He was drafted, with very little option, into the employment of the gifts nature endowed him with as his means of existence in a world in which violence is an essential ingredient and the currency.
