It was still dark out at 1 in the morning. There was nothing but the SUV's headlights lighting up the narrow gravel road, and the weeds and trees that imperfectly lined the corners of it. It was also quiet. Except for the sound of the wheels turning against the ground—making an endless white noise—and the car's stereo softly playing out mellow songs from decades past.
