---
Thunder cracked across the sky as if the world itself sensed what was coming.
Kael pushed himself off the bed, ignoring the pain ripping through his body. Shadows swarmed around him, warning, preparing, sharpening like invisible blades.
Aria grabbed his arm.
âYouâre still hurtââ
âI donât care.â
His voice was cold steel.
âNo one touches you. Not while Iâm breathing.â
Rowan stood stiffly near the door.
âTheyâll be here in minutes.â
Aria looked between them, her heart rattling against her ribs.
âWhy are the Elders coming? What do they want from me?â
Kaelâs jaw clenched.
âThey fear what we are.â
Aria shook her head.
âI didnât do anything.â
âYou did the one thing they fear the most,â Kael said quietly. âYou touched a Shadow Wolfâs heart.â
Ariaâs breath caught.
Rowan whispered, âThat bond makes him stronger than any Alpha alive. And that terrifies them.â
Kaelâs shadows thrashed violently at the reminder.
Aria stepped in front of Kael, her palms on his chest.
âYouâre not going to fight them alone.â
His eyes darkened.
âYou stay behind me.â
âNo.â
âAriaââ
âWe face this together. I wonât hide while everyone tries to tear you apart.â
Something in Kaelâs expression crackedâadmiration, fear, love, all blending into one dangerous emotion.
Thenâ
**THUD. THUD. THUD.**
A heavy knock shook the door.
Rowan stiffened.
âTheyâre here.â
Kaelâs voice turned lethal.
âLet them in.â
Rowan opened the door a crackâbut the Elders pushed their way inside.
Three of them.
Cloaked.
Silent.
Smelling of magic older than any pack.
Their eyes glowed with cold judgment as they looked at Kael.
Elder Marius stepped forward.
The oldest.
The cruelest.
The one who had always feared Kael the most.
âShadow Wolf,â Marius said, his voice echoing like a death sentence. âYou have broken the sacred law.â
Kael straightened.
âWhat law?â
âYou formed a bond with a human girl,â Marius said sharply. âA forbidden act.â
Aria stepped forward before Kael could react.
âI bonded with him. It wasnât forced. I chose it.â
The Elders stared at her as if she were something dirty.
âA human does not choose,â Marius hissed. âYou are weak. Fragile. You cannot control him.â
Kael growled, shadows flaring.
Aria stepped closer.
âKael doesnât need to be controlled.â
Marius turned to her, eyes narrowing.
âYou speak boldly for someone who holds the fate of a curse in her hands.â
Aria swallowed but kept her chin up.
âI wonât let you take him.â
The second Elder, Liraâcold, calculatingâstepped forward.
âYou misunderstand, girl. We are not here to take him.â
Kaelâs shadows recoiled.
Liraâs lips curled.
âWe are here to take *you*.â
Aria froze.
Kael moved so fast Rowan didnât even see him.
He was suddenly in front of Aria, shadows breathing like a living beast around him.
âYou touch her,â Kael said, voice deep and deadly, âand you die.â
Marius laughedâa chilling, ancient sound.
âYou are unstable, Shadow Wolf. The girl is making you worse.â
âThat girl,â Kael growled, âis the only reason Iâm still alive.â
The Elders exchanged glances.
Lira spoke softly, âWhich is exactly why she must be removed. If she continues the bond, your shadows will grow beyond control.â
âThey already are,â Aria snapped. âBut he still protects everyone.â
Marius shook his head.
âYou donât understand the curse, child. No one bonded to a Shadow Wolf has ever survived.â
Ariaâs breath stopped.
Kael flinched like heâd been struck.
âWhat?â she whispered.
Marius continued, âThe bond ties his darkness to your soul. Slowly, it will drain your energy⊠your life⊠until you wither.â
Kaelâs shadows exploded behind him in a violent storm.
âStop talking.â
But Marius didnât.
âYou will die, girl. And when you do, the beast inside him will break free and destroy us all.â
Aria shook her head violently.
âNo. I donât believe you.â
Lira raised her hand, revealing an ancient scroll sealed in black wax.
âThis is the prophecy,â she said. âWritten centuries ago.â
Kael snarled. âBurn it.â
âIt says,â Lira continued loudly, ignoring him,
*âWhen the heart of light binds the wolf of shadows, either salvation or ruin will rise. But the light will fade first.â*
Ariaâs knees weakened.
She felt Kaelâs hand grip her waist instantly, steadying her.
Holding her.
Almost crushing her with fear.
âNo,â he breathed. âNo⊠AriaâŠâ
She turned to him.
âKael, look at me.â
His eyes were wild.
Terrified.
Broken.
âThey think youâll kill me,â she whispered. âIs that why you were afraid of the bond?â
Kaelâs voice cracked.
âYes. I canât lose you.â
âAnd you wonât,â she said fiercely.
Marius scoffed.
âYou see? Foolish. Emotional. Weak. She clouds your judgment.â
Kaelâs head snapped toward him.
âYou call her weak again,â he growled, âand Iâll tear your throat out.â
Lira stepped back slightly.
Fear flickered in her ancient eyes.
Marius lifted his arm.
âStand down, Shadow Wolf.â
Kael didnât move.
His shadows roared behind him.
Aria placed her hand against Kaelâs chest.
âKael⊠breathe.â
His body trembled.
Her touch steadied him instantly.
Marius saw itâand his eyes darkened.
âThat bond must be severed,â he commanded. âTonight.â
Kaelâs roar shook the entire house.
â**OVER MY DEAD BODY.**â
Marius smirked.
âSo be it.â
He lifted his staffâdark magic gathering at the tip.
Aria reacted before she could think.
She stepped in front of Kael.
Kaelâs heart stopped.
âARIA!â
But it was too late.
Marius released the spellâblack, burning power shooting straight at her.
Kael lunged forwardâtoo slow.
The spell struck Aria in the chest.
Her breath left her body.
Her knees buckled.
Darkness swallowed her vision.
She collapsed into Kaelâs arms.
âNO!â Kael screamed, catching her before she hit the ground.
His shadows spun wildlyâfury, pain, devastation ripping through him.
Aria tried to speak, her voice barely a whisper.
âK⊠KaelâŠâ
His eyes glowed with pure, murderous darkness.
âStay with me, Aria. Donât you dare leave me.â
Her fingers curled weakly around his shirt.
âI⊠trust⊠youâŠâ
And then her eyes fluttered closed.
Kaelâs world shattered.
He lifted his head slowlyâshadows rising like a storm.
When he spoke, the room trembled.
âYou just cursed your own fate,â he growled at the Elders.
âBecause the next breath you take⊠will be your last.â
