I leaned back in my seat, wincing again as the train jostled. Kisten slept in the bed next to me, his breathing slow and heavy. Brown and white feathers rippled across his arms in his sleep and I knew he was dreaming of flying again. Since he had been disconnected from the Grimm when Mother killed them, Kisten’s animals only responded out of fear, but it still left his control fragile. He managed to keep them from overtaking him, but when he slept, they often manifested, causing him to shift in his sleep. The first time it happened had been terrifying, but I knew that I could merely wake Kisten if his animal got out of hand.
