Chapter 6

As soon as she walked into the pizza place, I could tell she was special. Sniffing the air, I could smell the sweet scent of peppermint and lemon. My wolf Dainal perked up at the sight of her. As her and her friends ordered and sat down, I could tell that the guy with them was her boyfriend. Dainal didn't like the thought of someone touching her. Is she our mate? I ask him. He shakes his head. I don't know. I know she's special but she might not be 18 yet. Why is she with those humans? Is she human? He shrugs, not knowing the answer either. As the waitress hands them their food, the boys get up to leave. Kyle, my best friend and future Beta, asks if I'm coming. I waved him off and told him I'd meet him at the apartment. He shrugs, following the others. I notice her stiffening when she notices that I don't follow my friends. I get on my phone and send some emails while they finish eating. I look up and realize that she is paying for her meal and about to walk out. I pay for mine and then follow to see where she's staying. Danial growls when he sees the boy wrap his arm around her waist. Hey, I snapped at him. We don't even know if she's ours, so don't lose your cool. He huffs loudly in my head before receding in the back of my brain. I follow her till I see the building she's in and manage to catch her name before she disappears into the building. I got out my phone and typed in the name Lila into the school roster. This college is on pack land but we allow humans to live here and go to school, but we still make sure to keep our identities a secret from them. Being the future alpha of the White Waters pack, I have access to the list of students that come here. Her full name is Lila Ann Hendren. She's 17 now but her 18th birthday is June 9th. That's this week, I think to myself. Hey, at least we don't have to wait long to find out if she's our mate, says Danial. I turned and slowly walked towards my apartment. When in my room, I stay up for a couple hours doing pack business before looking at my phone and seeing the time. s**t its 2 am. I have to be up by 7. I groaned as I lay down in my bed and drifted into a dreamless sleep. I woke up to someone sitting on my bed for a second. I thought it was my little sister. When we were little she would always run into my room every day to wake me up. When there was a storm outside, my parents would come to my room to find us passed out in my bed. That just made the accident even harder. I opened my eyes to see Kyle lying beside me. Look, I don’t know what last night was about but I’m glad you got some sleep. What are you talking about? I didn't go to bed till 2, I reported. No s**t Sherlock, it’s 8:45. We have to go in 5 min. I set up quickly and grabbed my phone. Damn, I didn’t even hear my alarm. I say more to myself than to Kyle. Yeah, he says while yawning. He tosses me a banana while walking out and says I'm going to the car, get dressed and meet me down there. I throw on some shorts and a t-shirt, grabbing a water bottle out of the fridge. I walk towards the front door, locking it as I leave. I turned away from the door and started walking towards Kyle's car. Jumping in, he pulls out of the parking lot and heads towards campus. We don't really need to drive; it's a 5 minute walk and a 2 minute drive, but we have to go to the pack meeting after group sessions. As Kyle puts the car in park, I rest my head on the seat and say 1 more year and we're done. Kyle nods in agreement and we both get out of the car and head towards our groups.
