I woke up the next morning feeling lighter than I had in months. Not happy exactly. Not resolved. Just lighter, the specific feeling of a woman who had put down something heavy and was still getting used to the absence of the weight. I made tea. I sat at Angela's table. I waited for my phone to light up. It didn't. I told myself it was early. He was probably sleeping. Normal people slept past six in the morning and Luca Carver was many things but he was still a person who needed sleep like everyone else. I drank my tea. I made Eli's breakfast. I read a book for twenty minutes while Eli ate and told Angela about a dream he'd had involving Captain bear and a very large cake. My phone stayed dark. By ten o'clock something small and uncomfortable had settled in my chest. Not worry.
