The Last Normal Day

I woke up at five. Not because of an alarm. Just woke up the way you wake up when your body knows something your mind is still catching up to. I lay in the dark and listened to Daniel breathing beside me and looked at the ceiling and thought about Thursday. Two days. I had two days to move through my life like nothing was different while everything was different and I had never been more grateful for the years I had spent learning to keep my face still. I got up quietly. I made tea. I sat at the kitchen table in the dark and wrote a list in my head of everything that needed to happen before Thursday. What to pack. What to leave. What to say to Dr. Anand about Eli's transfer. What to tell the hospital. What to tell no one. The list was long. I drank my tea and started mentally check
