I woke up at five in the morning to an empty bed. Daniel had come in sometime in the night because his side was slept in but he was already gone before my alarm went off and the only evidence he had been there at all was the slight indent in his pillow and the smell of his shower gel hanging faintly in the bathroom. I stood at the sink and looked at my reflection. I looked like someone who had slept three hours and spent the other five having a conversation with herself that hadn't reached any conclusions. I splashed water on my face. I got dressed. I made tea I didn't finish and grabbed my bag and drove to work in the early morning quiet and told myself today was just another day and I was just another woman going to her job and none of the rest of it existed between eight and two.
