The instant Mr. Harris finished speaking, a thunderous wave of ridicule swept through the hall.
"Mr. Harris himself said it's fake. What else can this woman possibly say?"
"She's wasted enough of our time. Get on with the auction!"
"Drag her out! Don't let her cause any more trouble!"
At the shouts, several security guards stepped forward. Their thick hands clamped around my shoulders and arms.
Nathan looked down at me, a cruel smile tugging at his lips.
"Evelyn, I gave you a chance. You insisted on humiliating yourself."
Sophia left Nathan's side and slowly approached me beneath everyone's watchful gaze.
Tilting her head, she smiled. "Evelyn, I know you can't accept reality, but you still can't insult the Bennett family."
"Their name is far too distinguished for you to exploit. Get on your knees, bow your head, and apologize to them."
Sophia glanced at Mr. Harris before adding, "Isn't that right, Mr. Harris?"
Seated in his wheelchair, he nodded. "Apologize, young lady. The Bennetts may no longer be active in business, but I once worked with them. You could say I'm an old friend."
"If you impersonate one of them in front of me, you owe us an explanation."
"Kneel! Apologize!" someone in the crowd shouted.
Taunts rose from every direction like a tide determined to drown me.
I stared coldly at Sophia.
She met my eyes, leaned closer, and whispered so only I could hear.
"You know what? Nathan said that once he's tired of playing with you..."
"He'll hand you over to his business partners, one after another, each taking a turn."
Sophia stepped back, her eyes full of mockery.
The guards pushed down on my shoulders while driving their knees into the backs of my legs.
My knees began to buckle. Anxiety stirred inside me. Had he not received my message?
Sophia took another two steps back and watched with undisguised satisfaction as I was about to kneel.
Just before my knees touched the floor—
Bang!
The doors to the auction hall were kicked open from outside with a deafening crash.
Startled, the guards released me.
He was here.
