The rest of the day went by in a blur. Michael felt embarrassed about how sad and disappointed he was, but try as he might, he could not cheer up. He could smile, he could chuckle here and there, but he was rendered incapable of actually contributing to a conversation or in any way displaying real joy. Felix’s text messages didn’t help, and to his shame, neither did Eleanor’s encouragement. Surprisingly, not to say blissfully, Eleanor did not make Michael talk about it in any meaningful way. Michael kept expecting her to lose her patience all throughout the day, but despite being visibly concerned, if not a bit hurt by his unwillingness to share and talk about it, she didn’t leave his side, and she didn’t stop talking to him.
