CHAPTER - 6

I stood there, watching as his car disappeared down the road, the tail lights fading into the distance. The unanswered questions and unresolved tension sat heavy in my chest, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that Rohan was holding something back—something that might change everything. As I walked inside, frustration churned within me, not just from the interruption but from the nagging thought that what he hadn’t said might have been exactly what I needed to hear. Now, all I was left with were questions, each one heavier than the last, pressing down on me like an unrelenting tide. The familiar warmth of home was quickly eclipsed by the mischievous grins stretched across Ishan and Siya’s faces. Seated comfortably in the living room, they looked like predators lying in wait, ready to pounce the moment I entered. “So, how was your date with Rohan?” Siya asked, raising an eyebrow with a smirk. Ishan leaned back, his grin widening. “Yeah, did he sweep you off your feet with that charm and those killer looks?” Rolling my eyes, I tried to act nonchalant, though I could feel the heat creeping up my neck. “It wasn’t a date,” I said, brushing their comments aside. “We just talked, and then he left. That’s it.” But my attempt at dismissiveness only fueled their antics. They exchanged a knowing glance, their teasing smiles refusing to fade. “Come on, Ishu, spill the beans!” Siya prodded, barely holding back her laughter. Ishan chimed in, his tone dripping with playful mockery. “Yeah, we promise we won’t tease you… much.” I couldn’t help but giggle despite myself, their infectious energy breaking down my defenses. “Will you two stop? It’s not a big deal,” I said, shaking my head in exasperation, though the smile tugging at my lips betrayed me. “Alright, fine,” Siya said, throwing up her hands dramatically. “Whatever you say, madam.” Ishan chuckled, but before he could launch into another round of teasing, he dropped a bombshell. “By the way, we finalized the wedding details today.” “What?” I blurted, my eyes widening. “Already?” Siya nodded enthusiastically, her smile lighting up the room. “Yes! The wedding is in one and a half weeks. Can you believe it?” I felt my stomach flip. Two weeks? It felt too soon, too rushed, like the ground beneath me was shifting. Before I could process the whirlwind of emotions threatening to consume me, Siya snapped her fingers in front of my face, pulling me back to reality. “Earth to Ishu! Are you even listening to me?” she teased, her amusement evident in her sparkling eyes. I shook my head sheepishly. “No, I wasn’t.” Ishan seized the opportunity, his voice laced with mischief. “Why would she listen? She’s obviously daydreaming about her ‘would-be husband.’” He burst into laughter, clearly pleased with himself. Without missing a beat, Siya and I exchanged a look, and together, we whacked him on the shoulder. He yelped in mock pain, laughing as he rubbed the spot. “Anyway,” Siya continued, undeterred, “you need to take some time off work and gear up for wedding prep. Decorations, catering, music… and your dress! We’re going shopping tomorrow, and I was thinking of asking Nidhi and Saanvi to join us. It’ll be a blast!” I nodded slowly, still overwhelmed by how quickly everything was happening. “Sounds good,” I mumbled, forcing a smile. But beneath the surface, my thoughts were swirling. Excusing myself, I headed to my room, desperate for a moment of quiet. Tossing my phone onto the bed, I sank onto the mattress with a sigh, staring at the ceiling as my mind raced. Just as I began to relax, my phone rang, jolting me out of my reverie. I grabbed it, seeing Nidhi’s name on the screen. When I answered, I realized it wasn’t just her—Saanvi was on the line too. “Hey, girl!” Nidhi’s cheerful voice greeted me, her excitement palpable. “Hey!” Saanvi chimed in, her tone was just as lively. I couldn’t help but smile, their energy washing over me like a soothing balm. “Hey, guys! What’s up?” The three of us fell into our usual rhythm, talking about everything and nothing, laughter punctuating every other sentence. For a while, I forgot my worries, lost in the comfort of our friendship. Then, I decided it was time to break the news. Taking a deep breath, I said, “I have something to tell you.” The line went silent for a moment, anticipation hanging in the air. “What is it?” Nidhi asked eagerly. “The wedding date is set,” I announced, my voice trembling with a mix of excitement and nervousness. “It’s in two weeks.” Their reaction was immediate—squeals of delight echoed through the phone. “What? That’s so soon!” Nidhi exclaimed. Saanvi’s voice bubbled with enthusiasm. “Oh my god, Ishu! We have to plan everything now!” “I know,” I said, laughing at their excitement. “It’s all happening so fast. But Siya and Ishan planned a shopping trip tomorrow, and I was hoping you two could come.” Nidhi didn’t miss a beat. “Are you kidding? Of course, we’re coming!” she exclaimed, her voice practically vibrating with excitement. “This is monumental, Ishika. We wouldn’t miss it for anything!” Saanvi echoed her enthusiasm. “Absolutely! Shopping for your wedding dress? Tomorrow is going to be unforgettable. I’m already imagining the fun we’ll have!” Their energy was infectious, and I found myself laughing despite the whirlwind of emotions I’d been grappling with. “You guys are the best,” I said sincerely, my voice soft with gratitude. Having them by my side made everything feel a little less overwhelming. Nidhi’s tone turned teasing. “Alright, spill the details. Are we going for timeless elegance, fairytale glamour, or something that’ll leave Rohan speechless and drooling?” My cheeks flushed instantly, and I shook my head, though they couldn’t see me. “Let’s just focus on finding something I feel good in,” I replied, trying to downplay her dramatics, but my smile betrayed me. “Fine, fine,” Saanvi said, laughing. “But don’t think you’re getting away with anything less than perfection. You deserve to look like a queen, and we’re going to make sure of it.” The next hour flew by in a blur of excited chatter and ideas. We debated color palettes, embroidery styles, and whether I should lean into a traditional look or something more contemporary. Nidhi and Saanvi’s playful banter kept me laughing, easing the nervous tension that had been weighing on me all day. When we finally ended the call, I lay back on my bed, staring at the ceiling with a mix of emotions swirling in my chest. The anxiety about how quickly everything was happening was still there, but so was something else—hope. With Nidhi and Saanvi by my side, I felt stronger, more prepared to face the coming days. Tomorrow would be a big step forward, and I wasn’t sure how everything would unfold, but for the first time in days, I felt a spark of excitement. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be alright. The days that followed blurred into a whirlwind of activity—shopping trips, family gatherings, and lively meetups with friends filled every waking moment. Each day felt like a race against the clock, with every hour meticulously planned and packed to the brim. I was moving at a relentless pace, caught in the frenzy of preparations with little room to breathe. At the café, life was just as demanding. A sudden influx of customers had left us struggling to keep up, and I found myself pulling longer hours, juggling endless tasks. The mounting stress weighed heavily, leaving me exhausted and stretched thin. Yet, beneath the surface of all this chaos, a nagging sense of unease began to creep in. It was subtle at first—a fleeting thought, a vague discomfort—but it grew stronger with each passing day. I tried to dismiss it as pre-wedding nerves, convincing myself it was nothing more than the natural anxiety of such a big occasion. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t that simple. As the wedding day drew closer, the feeling of dread became harder to ignore. With only two days left, I felt like I was spiraling, unable to catch my breath or regain control. The uncertainty clawed at me, leaving me restless and on edge. What was happening? Why did this uneasiness linger, refusing to let go? Something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. The weight of the unknown was suffocating.
