The sound of her name echoed through the storm.
“Maya, run!”
Her pulse slammed against her ribs as she turned, her shoes splashing through the wet pavement. The night around her was alive—thunder rolling, rain slicing down, the city lights distorted into smears of gold and red. But it wasn’t the storm she was running from. It was them.
Footsteps followed. Heavy. Intentional.
Her lungs burned as she ducked into a narrow alley, pressing herself against the brick wall. Every breath felt too loud.
A figure appeared at the mouth of the alley—tall, confident, wearing the same calm she’d once mistaken for safety. Adrian.
“Why are you following me?” Her voice trembled.
His expression was unreadable under the rain, jaw tight, eyes darker than the night around them. “Because you weren’t supposed to be there tonight.”
“What are you talking about?” she demanded, her voice cracking between confusion and fear.
He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, the distance between them shrinking. “You think that was an accident? The car that hit you, the men who’ve been watching you—Maya, this isn’t random.”
Her heart froze. “Then what is it?”
He hesitated for a beat, something almost like guilt flickering in his eyes. “It’s because of me.”
The words hit harder than the rain.
Maya stared at him, shaking her head slowly. “What did you do, Adrian?”
Before he could answer, a sharp noise—metal scraping pavement—cut through the air. A shadow moved behind him, and instinct screamed before her voice could.
“Adrian!”
He turned just in time to block the blow aimed at his head. The attacker lunged again, a flash of steel glinting in the dim light. Adrian shoved Maya backward, shouting, “Run!”
This time, she did.
She ran until her legs screamed and her breath turned to fire. When she stopped, she was miles away, soaked and shaking, staring back at the city she thought she knew.
And for the first time, she realized Adrian wasn’t just a stranger who saved her.
He was the reason danger had found her in the first place.
But what she didn’t know yet—was that Adrian was bleeding in that alley, whispering her name like a promise and a curse.
And somewhere far from both of them… a phone call was made.
“She’s still alive,” a voice said on the other end.
“Then it’s time we finish what he started.”
