Later that night, Samantha moved her things and went to a nearby hotel. When it dawned to her that she had no other place to go, she picked up her phone and dialed her dad’s number; she hasn’t called him since she moved out of his house. She didn’t expect him to pick the call, but as she heard a deep voice speak through the phone, she burst out crying.
“Hello Samantha.” Mr Martins Reynold said in a rather curious tone.
“Dad! Dad please I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry for everything I’ve ever done, please I need to see you! I need to talk to you.” All her makeup wearing off because of tears.
“Oh my Samantha, wipe your tears, could you come home tomorrow? I’d be really glad if you do.”
“Okay dad, I will enter the first train going to Northview tomorrow morning.” She said, her voice more relaxing.
*********
Samantha stepped out of the taxi in front of Martins Reynold’s building, seven-story memorial to her father’s business. The building still looked same but for some reason, it also looked better than four years ago.
The security guard of four years ago still looked the same, he greeted her as she entered. “Good morning Ms. Samantha.”
She was surprised the guard could still remember her even after a very long time.
The executive elevator swiftly took her to the top floor. No ID or biometrics needed;it could still recognize her face. She thought to herself, ‘money couldn’t buy happiness but at least it can buy cool tech’
At the sight of Samantha, Martins Reynold’s secretary jumped and ushered her to her father’s office.
“He’s waiting for you ma’am”
“Thank you.” She said, moving to the office arena.
Samantha paused outside her father’s office, collecting herself. Don’t cry. Don’t break down. He’s still your dad. He would forgive you and be happy to see you. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the heavy cypress wood door.
Martins Reynold sat behind a large desk almost the size of a small boat. At age 70 Martins still came to work everyday, even though his doctors have been telling him to take some breaks because of his age and most especially his health.
“Oh my sweetheart.” He said, beaming in joy as he stood to hug her.
Samantha went straight to him and hugged him. He smelled like bubble gum and new clothes.
“Sit my daily.” He gestured to the chair over his desk. “You look so messy Sammy. What did they do to you?”
Samantha smiled a bit, she missed her dad’s old jokes.
“Good morning to you too, dad”
“Oh please, I’m too old for pleasantries. Spare me the greetings and tell me all that has happened to you.” He studied her over his glasses.
Samantha heaved a sigh and began.
“Everything was going well, everything was fine until he became successful in his fashion house. He started coming home late, he always abused me verbally and told me how fat and ugly I am compared to the girls in his fashion house, nothing I did ever pleased him again and the relationship started crumbling. I tried all my best, everything I could to…” the tears gushed out like a flowing river, Samantha couldn’t hold herself anymore.
Martins stretched his hands and gave her a paper towel and proceeded to speak.
“Say no more Sammy, I understand how you feel.” He continued, “you know, I’ve never been in support of that relationship from the very first day but you wouldn’t listen. You were so blinded by love. But I wouldn’t blame you at all. At least you’re back home and he lost his billion dollar girlfriend.”
“Billion dollar girlfriend? What does that even mean?” Samantha asked, still drenched in tears.
“We’ll. I must confess you came back at the right time because of you hadn’t come now, I would have been left with no choice than to sell the company.”
“Sell the company? I don’t understand, dad please explain further.” She sounded more relaxed and wiped her tears.
“Velvet fashion industry is one of the biggest in the whole of the country I’m sure you know that by now and it has to continue. A lot of people depend on this company but thank goodness you’re here today so I have to hand the company over to you.”
“What?!” Samantha exclaimed. “Dad, I’m not fit for the job of a ceo, I In fact just came back and I’m emotionally traumatized. Asides that, I don’t feel I’m intelligent enough and fierce enough to control everybody in this industry.” She said, tears gathering very little in her eyes but went back down when she was done talking and swallowed her saliva.
Martins laughed calmly and said to her, “ oh my daughter. You still haven’t changed. Well, I’m sure you didn’t know this before you left but I have stage zero cancer and I can’t keep on being ceo. The doctors said I shouldn’t over work so as to make the treatment effective.”
“Why have all these befallen me? First, my four years relationship ended and now you’re seriously ill?” Her tears rising.
Martins laughed even more and walked up to her, “don’t worry darling, everything would be fine, trust me. Now see, why don’t I show you around the building, we’ve made a few changes since you left.” He said, winking at her. “And plus, there are some new staffs I’d like you to meet.” He added.
***************
Outside the office, Martins held Samantha’s arms and walked her to the new places that weren’t there before. There wasn’t much to see actually, Martins just wanted to leave the office to make Samantha feel more safe and comfortable.
Martins and Samantha went to the staff quarters and at the sight of Martins, the staffs greeted in accord.
“Hello everyone, this is my Samantha my long lost daughter, I would like the new staffs to come forward and introduce themselves.” Martins said, gesturing his hands to Samantha.
The new staffs walked one after the other to come and introduce themselves to Samantha.
After that, they went back to the main building and Martins showed Samantha the awards they’ve won within four years of her absence.
“Look! This is the award for the best fashion designing industry in the whole of Northview.” Martins said.
“Wow! This is such a beautiful trophy, it’s one of a kind.” Samantha said, twirling the trophy.
“I know right! Now look at this one, it’s a certificate of collaboration with the biggest brands like Chanel, Versace, Zara and many of them!” He said in a beaming smile.
“Wow dad, you’ve worked so hard to archive all these.” Samantha said in a proud tone.
“Yes and lastly, to celebrate your return, I’d take you to your Favourite restaurant.”
“You mean wingstop?” She asked in a big smile.
“Yes darling!”
“Thank you so much daddy, but before then, I have to go home and freshen up.”
“You sure do.” They both laughed as they walked out of the building.
