Chapter 8

2072 Words
Barrett's POV I got extremely drunk Saturday night at Everette's house and then stayed in his guest room all day ignoring everyone. Both my parents called several times and Everette tried to come in but a threat to cut off his balls if he did stopped him. Come Sunday night, I had to go home because I had to work on Monday and I had to have clean clothes. The only downfall to it was needing a ride home and his constant questions that I refused to answer. Now I had a plan in place to get her back. It's what I wanted. I loved her and could forgive her for this. We could move on and fix it. I just needed the perfect person to help me. That was the hard part. I could pay someone, but she would see right through that, and it was going to take a very special person to help me. My phone went off in my pocket as I walked out of the courthouse. I grabbed it in hopes that it would be Lilly. It wasn't, but I didn't get a chance to read the message from my secretary because I ran straight into someone and my phone went flying out of my hands and so did theirs, but they landed on their ass. "I'm so sorry. Are you OK?" I asked the girl, now sprawled out on the ground. I knew this girl. She was supposed to be making our wedding cake and I knew right here that she would be perfect. Lilly loved her work but criticized everything about her. She was frumpy and chubby, so she said. I didn't see it, but I only paid attention to Lilly. "I'm fine. I'm sorry I wasn't watching where I was going." "Neither was I," I told her, and held out my hand to help her up. I helped her gather her papers that were scattered everywhere and the name at the top caught my attention. She was the girl that Rick my client hurt. Well, he was, but I was quitting the law firm and him. I just haven't made it to the office yet this morning. Maybe she wasn't the perfect girl for my plan because I'm sure she was hurting just as much as I was. I would have to take her out and go from there. "Can I buy you a coffee? Let me make up from knocking you over," I asked and watched as her face flushed red. "Thanks, I appreciate the offer, but I have a mess to take care of." "How about dinner then? Everyone has to eat." "Seriously? I just met you and your fiancé on Saturday," she snapped at me and I held my hands up in defense. "We broke up. The engagement is off. She was cheating on me." "So, I'm the rebound?" "Not at all. It was a simple meal, was all." "Only if you're buying pizza and beer," she said, and I had to c**k my head to the side because I knew she knew how much money I make and anyone else would have been all over the most expensive place in town, which is where I planned on taking her, but I could see she had walls up, but I could break them down. "I haven't had pizza and beer in a long time." "Perfect, meet me at Slices at six," she said and walked away. I couldn't help but turn and watch her. Her ass was nice. It was full and plump, and I found myself wanting to squeeze it, hold it in my hands. Lilly's was so tiny but not this girl. I left the courthouse and went straight to my office. I walked past my secretary who was trying to tell me something, but I was a man on a mission. I went straight to Brad's office and threw the door open. He was here alone, and I'm guessing by the people that were scrambling in here they all knew what had happened. "What the hell? Get out of my office," Brad yelled and scooted back from his desk but remained in his chair. I walked as fast as I could to him and had my fist c****d back and let it fly to his nose. He didn't even try to defend himself but the sickening sound of his nose breaking and then him screaming was a short-lived sense of relief. "What the hell are you doing Barrette?" John asked behind me. I turned and just looked at him. He didn't look surprised at all. "I quit," I said, and that got a surprised look from him. "Hold on a second, we don't want you to make any drastic moves. Why don't you come to my office, and we can discuss things," he said, and I was honestly surprised by that, but I followed him to his office and he motioned for me to take a seat, and he went and sat behind his desk. "He deserved that and more. You've been on our shortlist for partner, but he was dragging his feet about it, and now we know why," he said, and all I could do was laugh. The fucker has been playing me for a while now. "So, you aren't going to fire me?" "God no. As a partner, there is a contract that we all sign, and he has broken that contract, which gives us power to get rid of him," he explained, and the door opened and Edward walked in, laughing. "You've done us a great favor. He is out there crying over this, wanting your head and threatening to press charges." "That doesn't scare me." "I was just explaining our contract to him." "Good, let's make this easy, he's out, and you're in," Edward said, and this was the last thing that I ever thought would happen when I came in here and broke his nose. "I, um, I am a little shocked by this. I quit after breaking his nose, and now you are offering me a partner spot." "We wanted to when you won your murder case but as partners, we all have to agree and, well, Brad had his hang ups, but now we know why." "Take a few days, get your affairs in order and take a look at the contract and let us know. We can meet for dinner on Friday night," John said, and then reached into his desk drawer and handed me a file of paperwork. "Thank you, this was the last thing I expected." "I'm sure. Now we don't want to see you until Friday at dinner. " Stephano's seven." John said, "Oh and don't worry about Brad, we will handle it." I walked out of the office with a new-found happiness. Everything I ever wanted I was getting. The only problem is that the person I wanted to share it with isn't talking to me right now. I knew what my next move would be. I needed this contract reviewed, and I had just the person to review it. I drove the twenty minutes to his office and when I walked in, I was greeted by their secretary. She had been here for years and was always nice. I walked straight to my father's office and his glass walls were great for this type of situation. I knew he didn't have a client right now. My father was a complicated man. He was a great father. Always there, always supportive, but when I didn't follow in his footsteps it put a wedge between us, but I knew that I could count on him for this. "Barrette, what are you doing here? Your mother has been so worried about you?" "I'm fine father. In fact, things have turned around drastically for me today. I need you to look something over for me," I said and threw the envelope I had down on his desk. He grabbed it and started to pull the paperwork out. "You need to call your mother and let her know that you are OK. She has been talking with Sandra trying to figure out what happened, but Lilly isn't talking to anyone." I didn't say anything to him and just watched his face as he read the contract and waited for his reaction, and it didn't take long for his face to break out in a smile. "You made partner?" "Yes, after I walked into work this morning and punched Brad in the face." "Why would you punch one of the partners in the face and how did that land you this offer?" he asked, and I had to laugh at how ridiculous it sounded. I explained everything to him. He poured us both a drink from his bottle of scotch that he kept here hidden from my mom. She hated it when he drank, and he liked to have a glass when there was something to celebrate. "What are you going to do about Lilly now?" "I'm going to get her back. I have a plan and this right here helps." "If that is what you want, we will support it, but son, please be careful. Once a cheater, always a cheater and I hate to see you go through heartbreak again." "I know, but there has to be a reason why she did what she did, and I will fix that problem. I love her and I want to spend the rest of my life with her." I left his office and headed home. He was going to review the contract with a fine-tooth comb and get back to me with any problems that he could find. I could have done the same, but this was literally his job and he was damn good at it. When I got back to my apartment, it felt weird being here. I hadn't spent an afternoon here during the week in, well I don't know that I ever have. Lilly came at some point over the weekend and got her things out of here, but there were still little remnants of her here. Her shirt was lying on the living room floor and shuddered at the thought of why it was there. I spent the afternoon trying to find something to do, but there was nothing. I was nothing without her, and I was so damn bored. I finally changed out of my suite and put on a pair of jeans and headed out to go meet the baker for dinner. I was excited about the pizza and beer. I was torn about the girl though, because she could help me, but a part of me felt bad for even thinking of using another human like that. I walked into the pizza shop and the smell had my mouth watering and when I saw her my mouth watered just a little bit more. She looked good. She had these shorts on that showed that juicy ass of hers and the weird band t-shirt she had on was oddly adorable on her. She was sipping on a beer already and scrolling on her phone. I was a little surprised by my reaction to her. I didn't find her attractive at all at the courthouse, but now totally different. She looked different and acted differently. More carefree and relaxed, more herself. "Hi," I said, getting her attention and she looked up from her phone and then locked it and placed it on the table. I was honestly a little surprised by that. Lilly would always greet me and go back to whatever she was doing on her phone. Maybe it was because this was new. We didn't know each other. "Hello. I really thought maybe this was some kind of weird joke or something and really didn't think that you would come, but I needed the drink after my day, and I'm guessing that you do too, if your weekend went as badly as you said it did," She rambled, and I had to chuckle a little bit. "Beer and pizza are what I need and some good company, and it seems like I've gotten it all," I said, smiling at her, and like at the courthouse, she blushed, but a much deeper blush this time that went down her neck. I was quickly finding myself forgetting my plan and so intrigued by her.
